Baby Names

Preferred Spelling

ok. We found out we're having a girl...which was a shock as I have two boys and thought this one was too but anyway... we've had the name picked FOREVER but never the spelling

Catherine Bernadette is the name but Catherine is the spelling question.

my grandma was Catherine (spelled that way) and I like it that way BUT we will call her Catie or Katie but I'm afraid people will call her Cathy if I spell it that way vs. Katherine.

opinions???

I don't want to use the Y way (Kathryn or what not)

so... Katherine or Catherine (knowing that Gma was with a C but the nickname issue is my concern)

Re: Preferred Spelling

  • either or is fine. I know a Catie and no one has ever messed up her name.

If it was up to me though I'd go with Katherine. Only reason being I like the way it looks better.

I only like it with a C. It looks more sophisticated and classic. People aren't going to call her Cathy. That's an old name that no one uses for children anymore. My grandma is named Catherine too!

  • I like the spelling Katherine
  • Don't worry about the nickname! Use the C. My best friend's sister is Catherine, and she has gone by Cate her whole life. Given that, I see no reason why Catie would be a problem.?

  • Definitely Catherine. As it's been mentioned, no one will call her Cathy. It's dated, and Cate/Catie/Cady nicknames have become a lot more common. Beautiful name!
  • Definitely with a C.  Catherine is a very pretty name.  I think Cate/Cat/Cady are cute nicknames.
  • Thanks all!

    Catherine it is

its how my gma spelled it and how my DH liked it :)

my oldest DS will still call her kitty cat :) lol

Beautiful choice. I wish my name was Catherine!?

  • Just posted on the other Kate thread....I love it with a C, even for the nickname (Cate, Catie). ?

  • I think either spelling is fine and will have no bearing on her nn.  People probably won't call her Cathy unless you introduce her/she introduces herself as such.  And I don't see how C/K makes a difference there, because they could just as easily call her Kathy.
  • I like the way Katherine looks better, but I don't see any problem with sticking with Catherine.
  • Spelling it with a K wouldn't eliminate the possibility of being called Kathy. That being said, no one is going to call her Cathy - it's very out-dated. Go with Catherine - I like how it's different.
