Babies on the Brain

Help. My dog is obsessed with the baby swing.

We got our swing a few days ago because it was on major sale.  Score.

Now my dog is literally obsessed with the thing.  He's too small to get into it and has to stand on his hind legs to even see it, but he will NOT leave it alone.  He is either laying next to it, staring like a freak, or standing next to it and crying like a moron.  If we actually turn on the music and swinging motion, he goes insane.  I think he thinks it's a big giant toy for him but he can't quite work out how to use it.

At this point, we are just turning it on 3 or 4 times a day, in the hopes that he will get bored with it.  So far, he seems to be more enthralled each time it comes 'alive'.

Any other suggestions?

  • no-but that is pretty funny.  Put him in it and turn it on.  Maybe it will scare him away from it.

  • Sorry, no suggestions, but I literally LOL'd at "comes alive". My dogs are quirky so I'm surprised they aren't fascinated with the swing.
  • We would put our dog in the all the baby stuff.  Most of the time it made her terrified of it.

LOL!  I tried that once, but he was outta there like a bat out of hell in no time.  He's not a fan of actually being IN it apparently.

Get something you need to do that you do regularly in the area.  Like fold laundry or iron or cook or something (you can put it in the kitchen if needed, etc).  Turn it on and leave it on, and go about your business doing that chore.  He'll get used to it.  If he jumps around like a moron, put him on a leash and hook the leash to your body and keep him close to you while you do your chore.  If he's good, occasionally pass him a treat.  Ignore him 100% when he's bad.

    Basically, desensitize him to it.

Good advice, Fred.  I'll give it a whirl and see if all that helps.

It's really annoying, but at the same time, effing hilarious.  I can't help but laugh at him sometimes.

  • I wish I had some suggestions but that's so funny.  Poor pup.  He's confused about the new "toys" you keep bringing home but won't let him play with!

I know!  He keeps trying to get me to go over and 'show' him how to play with it.  He is totally confused...especially since the little toys on it look just like his toys.  LOL!

  • Sadly, no.

We bought a swing on sale (it was clearanced out of style about a year and a half ago) with the intention of using it to train the dog.  He loves noisy moving things, so we figured he would love to attack it.

    Instead he ignores it.

    So I've got nothing.
