Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone else think it's really bad to have TV on around DC?

I was just at my SIL's house for a week and the TV was on most of the day.  I didn't like having DS in the room with a gigantic TV blaring so I took him to other rooms to read and play.  I feel like having the TV on when DS is around keeps him from focusing on playing or reading or whatever and will make him ADD.

Agreed?

  • How will it  make him have ADD if the TV is on?

  • We moved our TV into another room before she was born for this reason.  Don't get me wrong, she is in front of the TV at times but I didn't want it to be a constant background distraction.

  • Depends- is your DS trying to watch the tv? I don't think that a week of exposure is going to "make him ADD"- there is a little more to it than that! But it is definitely best to make a habit of turning the tv off
  • My son doesn't pay attention to the TV so I don't mind.

I'm not sure.  I just think that having TV chatter--commercials, especially--and rapidly changing images on while DC is in the room playing or learning or listening to books or talking or whatever is a distraction that will reduce DC's attention span.  I don't know if ADD is the right term.

  • I guess that means my DS will have ADD.  We have a 58 incher.

  • I have the tv on for a good part of the day and I see no problem with it. It's not like I'm putting her in front of it to watch. I wouldn't be worried about a week.
  • DS is currently looking at the tv while playing with his toys.  DH is watching the news.  He's more interested in his toys, but will look up every once in a while.

    I'm not worried at all.

    Why?

  • We have the TV on all the time. DD usually doesnt pay attention to it. I actually read in a Parents magazine that the TV doesnt affect them until after they are 2 years old. Dont know how true it is. But that was the basic gist of the article.
  • Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that even having your LO in the same room with a TV on in the background isn't the best idea until two.  Wish I remembered where I read all this stuff.

This is what I'm thinking, too.  I don't know where I heard it but I remember it, too.  And it just feels that way to me.

  • Its usually on in the living room where we are during the day, he's usually so into the toys on the bouncer or playmat that he doesn't notice it.

OK I was wrong. It is Baby Talk Magazine. May 2009 Issue. Said that watching TV during the first 2 years had no effect on cognitive skills at age 3. But it does say do it in moderation.

  • My opinion, not a big deal unless you literally park their bouncer/swing in front of the tv.

I'm not worried. Esp about background noise.

  • we have the tv on a lot, but i am not incredibly worried about ADD. ?i do try and read to her a lot too.

I agree with you there. It certainly isn't the best idea, but it still isn't going to cause ADD if it is on in the background for one week. The fact that you are aware of it not feeling right says to me that you have nothing to worry about. If you stuck your child in front of the tv for hours and hours everyday and didn't stimulate him in other ways, then I would worry. Don't worry momma :)

I watch some shows during the day. Usually while she's on her playmat or napping. It's the same as having a radio or something on, I don't let her watch it so it's just noise. Plus, I have always kept it loud and bright during the day and quiet and dark at night- she has never had issues with confusing day and night. We still have some quiet times during the day though too- she naps in her crib and we read in her room.

  • i dont see anything wrong with the tv being on. we have a 52" and its just fine. he watches sports with FI sometimes. other times he's more entertained with toys or the lights or the ceiling fan.
  • I have ADHD and my parents never let me watch tv. just sayin.....
  • I guess I am horrible.  My DD loves to watch the tv.  We don't let her do it for long, and she has lots of other things to play with.  We sing and read books.  But she loves lights.  At this point, I don't know that she can see the difference between lights and the tv.
  • I limit her TV time to Maury and Steve Wilkos.

I want her to be well rounded.

  • My DS will turn to see the lights on the TV but he usually is more interested in looking at other things. The lights are usually what attracts their attention. If you look at baby toys, there are a lot of light up and musical toys that flash. TVs have similar characteristics.

I do agree that you shouldn't put your child in front of a TV but if it catches his/her attention, it's not going to cause ADD. That is why those Baby Einstien videos are so popular because it is lights and music.  It is highly recommended children under 2 not watch TV.

    Wow. You're pretty stupid.

This is not up for debate, people.
