Umbilical hernia--anyone?

I took the boys to the pedi today because they are spitting up constantly, and asked about Aiden's belly button sticking out.  He said it was a slight umbilical hernia and should clear up by the age of 1.  It doesn't seem to bother him when I push on it.

Does anyone have any experience with this?  The pedi said not to be concerned about it, but that's my job!

Re: Umbilical hernia--anyone?

  • One of my twins had an umbilical hernia and it went away by the time he was 2 1/2 months.  We were really concerend too because it stuck out far, about 1/2 inch, but our pedi said as long as it doesn't hurt him when you push in (which we did often to make sure it was still OK), there's nothing to be concerened about.  I was a little sad when it went away b/c that's how I told them apart!!!!

    No worries!!!

  • My DS had an unbilical hernia, and his belly button is still an outie.  It used to be gross though, and really protrude a good amount (like an eyeball) right after he ate.  It has gotten better, and he's had no issues from it.

  • DD had one. It was huge, it looked like the size of 1/2 my thumb sticking out of her belly button. I was so scared she would have it for life, but it is a perfect little innie belly button now. It went away at oh I think like 4 months or something.

  • both of my guys had them. After their cords fell off they went away a few weeks later. They have innies now.
  • My singleton did.  It went away before his 4 month appointment.
  • DD has one. It was very noticable the first few months and my pedi said what yours did. Around 5mo or so we noticed that it kind of sat flush instead of sticking out. Now, at 8mo its getting more like an innie.
  • both of mine had them.  ds' is almost gone but dd still has one.  I asked last time we were at the pedi if it should have cleared up by now but she said no worries.

  • My little guy has one. At first I was sad he had it but now I think it is cute and part of his character. My pedi said it should go away by 1 yr but if it is not gone by 4-5 yrs they will have to do surgery on it.
  • Yup! Lilly had one- her little turkey's done button. Her hernia was long gone by about 9w, maybe 10w. Totally nothing to worry about. Once their abs get stronger, they hold the hernia in.

  • BOTH of my girls have/had this...one is gone completely and the other is ALMOST gone completely. I asked my pedi about it and she said that MOST cases clear up without surgery...if you needed surgery it wouldn't be done until 2-3 years old to see if it clears up by then.
  • Haley has one, but it has almost closed up.  The pedi said that by 2 she will be fine.  It doesnt hurt them.  Nothing to really stress over!
  • my friends son had one and it was resolved by the time he was one.  she always put his diaper over the belly button...he didn't have pain...

i personally developed one while pregnant...not problems during pregnancy but super painful afterwards...over the last week it seems to be clearing up...not as painful or as "poked out".
