Help the Canadian out

Yes of course I could google this  - but I am curious to hear from live people.

Tell me about Grits. Are they only eaten in the south? Are they a staple breakfast food  -  or only now and then?

Are they any good?

  • It is not something that was ever eaten in my house.  However my Mom is Jewish and I'm pretty sure Jews don't do grits.

Grits were a staple in my house.  I make them with butter and milk.  Sprinkle with pepper and salt.  And use crisp turkey bacon to scoop it into my mouth.  I grew up in Virginia.

I stopped eating them recently because they have a uber high glycemic level and make me starving after three hours of consumption.  But yum!

I do not put cheese in them, but as a kid I used to add sugar and lots of milk to make a yummy porridge.

  • I think it's mostly southern, but I'm not sure.  I don't think I have ever eaten them.

  • Grits are mostly a southern thing. I would think they're gross until I tried them. The way I tried them with my exbf, and loved them, was with cheese and bacon....Yum Yum. My DH loves them too, but I don't cook them. So only when we go out to breakfast do we have them now.

  • Have you ever had Farina?  Sort of like that, and they can be for breakfast or anytime.  Half of my family is lives in the south, they put all kinds of things on their grits, cheese, maple syrup, butter, you name it.

  • Grits are mainly a southern thing.  It's kind of like oatmeal, but smaller little grains and creamier.  I like to put sugar and butter in mine - but haven't had them in years!

  • I am from the South, and yes, grits are eaten commonly down here. Different parts of the South have different kinds of grits- i.e. shrimp grits, cheese grits, plain grits with pepper, etc.

Growing up in Alabama, cheese grits were served for breakfast regularly at my house. And yes, they are delicious.

These days, I am in such a hurry to get to work, I only have cereal. Grits are for special occasion breakfasts only.

Actually no, and I googled it and it didn't sound familiar.

  • I'm puertorican and now live in Miami and I have no idea what grits are lol

    :waiting for replies:

  • I lived in NY most of my life, but spent two years in Florida as a kid.  I remember eating grits often when I lived in FL and from what I recall, they tasted very bland.  Kind of like oatmeal or instant potatoes.  Granted, I haven't had them in 25 years, so mine isn't the freshest impresion.  However, I wouldn't eat them know as I know how loaded with butter and fats grits are.

  • People eat grits for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You should try shrimp and grits... heavenly. I like mine with lots of cheddar cheese. Mmmm.
  • Grits are out of this world!!  Think of cornmeal.  They're good plan, with salt and pepper, butter, cheese.  They are good for both breakfast and dinner (Shrimp and grits).

Quaker oats makes instant single servings, and I love those.

    No I haven't actually....

What about couscous? Is it close to that texture wise?

Sounds kinda like cream of wheat when I read how people describe it.

  • I used to eat them at my BFF's house all the time when we were younger, just add lots and lots and lots of butter and a little salt.

Not healthy at all if I add everything to make them yummy!

Ummm yeah kinda like a thick cream of wheat with a gritty texture to it.  That's what it feels like on the tongue.  Not like couscous at all.

  • Grits are delish!! I think mainly a Southern thing...when my extended family gets together, you can always tell who the southerners are and who the yankees are by who is eating grits at breakfast.

Yes, there are instant grits. My DH makes me breakfast every morning, and a regular rotation is one fried egg and a bowl of instant grits.

And he's Jewish. So, at least one Jew does grits.

  • I'm a Canadian that grew up all over the US but mostly in TX and then lived in SC as an adult for 5 years. ?I didn't have grits until SC and had them in the 'shrimp and grits' form. ?They are yummy and are usually served savory. ?The closest thing I can compare in texture is Cream of Wheat which I used to eat as a kid, but it was sweet with maple syrup in it, rather than the firmer texture of polenta.

You can buy quick cooking grits, instant grits, or the longer cooking type in the south.?

Yes.....but I guess they aren't an 'essential' to me in the morning. Breakfast was a more formal affair at my parents' home than mine, so I guess the association I have with grits is that you need time to sit down and enjoy them....plus, it is shrimp and cheese grits that are prevalent along the Coast, and those take time....

  • Depends on what part of the country. South is mostly a grain type of grit.  Up here my DH's family all has "meat" grits. I won't touch it.  It's ground up parts of the cow that you basically can't do anything else with. Yuck.  Pretty popular around here though.  I have never tried either version.
  • Grits are very yummy and very southern. Traditional southern way to eat them is with butter, salt, and pepper - the cheese and bacon does sound good though. I always eat mine with sugar and cinnamon - my family says that's the yankee way to eat them, but I love it!  And yes there are instant grits.

  • Grits are typically found in the South, but growing up in CA we had them.  It's probably because my grandparents were from West Virigina though.  I prefer them for breakfast like cream of wheat with cinnamon, sugar, butter and little milk, but they are also served for lunch and dinner in a savory way, sort of like polenta.

  • I find this VERY funny!

::looks sideways at name:: I am from Arkansas right, well my senior year of high school we went to washington d.c on a school trip. We were waiting in line a the kennedy center and we were VERY bored, so we decide to start laying on our version of a thick southern drawl. About ten minutes later a mother and two daughters behind us asked us if they could ask us some questions, they were British. They asked us with very serious expressions where we were from followed by do we really not wear shoes in Arkansas, and what are grits? I have never laughed so hard. At that point none of us had ever had grits and were wearing shoes. Embarrassed lol

Needless to say we stopped in TN on the way back and had some grits. They are like cream of wheat but coarse. What you choose to put in them makes the favor.

That's funny. I actually was asked the same questions, like is DH your first cousin, do you wear shoes, are your parents in the KKK, when i was living in Greenville, SC- except I was not faking my accent, unfortunately.

I wanted to say, b*tch, just because AL is in the Deep South does not mean you are any less Southern than me! Grrr...

(clearly missed out on the grits though).

They were just shooting that as we left. We found it hilarious to watch the show and see all the people H had met there on it.

Population 800, he got to know a few people!

We really enjoyed eating at a winery near Altus....can't remember the name.
