We took Elliana in last Tuesday to have blood drawn for the THIRD time to see if she has a thyroid disorder (the first time, the results were normal but with the disclaimer that the lab didn't draw enough blood, so the sample was diluted and not 100% reliable...the second time, the results came back abnormal and he wanted to do some additional tests to see if it was a fluke). They had to draw blood from both arms because the tech didn't get enough blood from the first arm after twisting the needle around in her arm and torturing my baby to try and get more blood out.
Now we've been waiting for results since then, and finally got a call from the pedi today that two of the studies he ordered came back normal, but for the 3rd one, the lab coded it wrong and did the wrong test. They can't reuse the same vial of blood to do the correct test, and he needs that test result in order to verify whether she may have a thyroid disorder, so...we have to take her BACK to the lab this afternoon and let them draw MORE blood to redo that final test again. ARG!!!
I'm glad they do this as a newborn screening and I know they need to know valid results ASAP so she can start taking the medication if there is a problem, but I'm sickened by having to put her through this so many times!

Re: Update re: Elliana and hypothyroidism...ARG!
Awww, I know it is hard.
DD had low blood sugar when she was born. Her sugar levels just kept going down. She got stuck so many times in the first day while they tested her blood. Then when it was determined that she couldn't keep her levels up they wanted to put her on an IV. They tried multiple times in both hands and feet, but just could not get the line in. Then they got one in her head, but it blew out after a couple of minutes. And these were experienced NICU nurses!! So she ended up having to be restrained and get a line through her umbilical cord stump, which meant I couldn't hold her for 24 hours. And of course then she was stuck again multiple times for the next few days to make sure her sugar levels were ok.
Anyway, I feel your pain. But she is now a happy, healthy and extremely active 20 month old who doesn't remember any of it. I really think it might be harder on the mommy!
