I need to know I'm not the only one. My 2 year old was 36" & 35lbs. at his 2 year check up last month. People always assume he's so much older than new 2. I can't imagine what they think when he starts to talk and sounds like a new talker (you can't always understand him). It seems like so many 2 year olds are still able to be carried, but I'm having a hard time lifting mine, and don't get me started on strollers. I need a double now that DD is here, but DS is only 5 lbs. away from all the weight limits. He's sooooo not ready to walk everywhere and for long amounts of time. GRRRRR!
Re: Moms of larger toddlers
My 3 1/2 year old was bigger than that at 2. Right now, he's about 42 inches and 45 pounds. He looks like he's 5. I'm used to it because he started out looking like a 3 month old (he was almost 10 lbs). The comments seem to have slowed down a bit, but every once in awhile, I get "He's ONLY 3??!?!?"
If it makes you feel any better, your DS should slow down. Mine has only gained about a pound since his 3-year appointment. He's tough to carry and I don't do it often, but I guess I've worked my way up to it.
It's also weird because DD is relatively small. I think she weighs less now than he did at 9 months.
As far as strollers, do you think he'd do ok in a sit n'stand? That's what we have.
I was in your exact same situation... Amelia was 19 months when Sylvie was born, but she weighed 32.5 lbs. By the time she was 2, she was just about 35 lbs (and about 35.5 inches, I think.) I quickly got over being concerned about what people thought of her... I mean, it's easy enough to say something like, "yup, she's big for her age... most kids think she's at least 3 and can't figure out why she's not talking as well as they are." As for getting her around, I knew this would be tricky once #2 came, so I got her used to walking as much as I could... I was lucky in that she was a pretty good walker and wasn't prone to running off, so that worked for me.
I ended up getting a BOB Duallie in large part due to the high weight limits... it's worked out great so far. I also have a Joovy Caboose that works well.
I know it feels stressful, but you'll figure it out... and even if you don't, soon enough he'll be self-reliant enough to give you a much-needed break.
Ethan was always a big baby/toddler. He was 30 lbs at 15 months old and 35 lbs at 2.5 years old. The only reason for not so dramatic weight gain is because he started daycare and was sick a lot and refused to eat.
He's now 41 lbs at 4 y.o.
My 12 months old is 30 lbs. my back is aching.
DD will be 3 in one month. She's the size of a 3.5-4yo. It's really kind of funny when people ask her how old she is, and she answers "2!" She was close to 30 lbs at 2 years but almost 38".
She weighs anywhere between 33.5-35 lbs now (depending on the day and time) and must be close to 40". I actually notice the size more when she's around other kids who are obviously older but about the same size. DD is still pretty tentative running around compared to the bigger kids and will just stand back and wait for them to go first on the playground. My back hurts from holding her for any extended period of time (like say at church on Sundays). She doesn't always want to walk, and since I can't always carry her, we still use a stroller.
I'd say if you got a double stroller now, you'd probably get a good year of use out of it. I think they work past the weight limits anyway. DD still climbs into her exersaucers. They haven't broken yet, and I think the weight limit on them is about 25 lbs.
