Trying to Get Pregnant

Mittelschmerz Ladies

I posted last week with my brief story - TTC after years of BC, we've got an expiration date on my fertility and all that. Now that my dr has me all riled up, I'm freaking out about everything, for instance.

Since I quit the BC at the end of December, I may have O'd last month.  It was my first fairly normal cycle, but dr said i could have a normal cycle or 2 before O starts.  This cycle, I'm pretty much 99% sure I Od between Friday evening and Saturday morning (I'm still such a noob).  But, as I said, I'm freaking out over everything.  Here's my question.

I knew my OPK would be pos before I took it because I had started experiencing some pains in my lower abdomen, right side.  OPK was pos (or as pos as I had gotten.  Sat. mornings' was still pretty strong) but that pain got worse and lasted throughout Friday and Saturday.  It was never "bend over and scream with pain" bad, but it was enough where I didn't want to play hard with my niece at my sister's baby shower - and that is VERY unlike me. There's still a bit of tenderness on that side.

For those ladies who experience mittelschmerz, could that be what this was?  I don't want to call my dr and freak out every time something is "weird" but from what my friends said, they only experience some mild discomfort for an hour or so, and it goes away.

TIA

Re: Mittelschmerz Ladies

  • I get it, And it's a crampy feeling on one side or the other... but I still chart my basal temperature every morning in addition to using the OPK to confirm my O and that my body isn't just gearing up and failing.

  • Are you Charting your bbt, or just using opk's?

Yes it sounds like Ovulation pains, however they are different for everyone, not everyone gets it and it won't necessarily feel like that every cycle.

and what do you mean by this "TTC after years of BC, we've got an expiration date on my fertility and all that"

and this "It was my first fairly normal cycle, but dr said i could have a normal cycle or 2 before O starts."

I've been on BC for 8 years.  Had some issues at the end of HS and AF would visit for 2 weeks at a time.  Which was not fun. In 2005, I had a positive PAP, and since then I've been undergoing biopsies and LOOPs, but each re-PAP shows progression.  My grandmother took the anti-miscarriage drug when PG for my mom, and my mom has the 1st gen side effects.  The 2nd gen side effect looks like it will be early cervical cancer, but there aren't really enough of us yet to make that a statement.  Either way, dr says with my progression, it's best to start assuming I will eventually have cancer then to wait it out, hope, and be wrong.

My last PAP was last week, and we're not going to actively start trying until the results come in (should be today or tomorrow) just in case the results mean more treatment - which I can't have when PG.

I haven't started tracking my temp yet because I haven't had a truly normal cycle.  Last month I had some AF pains and a small amount of bleeding for 2 days, which is encouraging, but that was over 6 weeks ago.   For now, I'm just using OPKs, and it's more for knowledge.

On that note, I get up several times a night to pee and rarely sleep solidly for more than 2 - 3 hours at a time.  Will my BBT readings even be accurate?  Dr. said he didn't really want me to start tracking my temp at first because he finds it can add stress to the process.  But I'm not sure.  I do know that I've been reading up on it a little bit here and there, and I don't really understand it yet.  I'll need to get that book everyone suggests.

  • wow, I never heard of the anit-miscarriage drug, I can't imagine what that must be like. I'm very sorry for the grim prognosis and hope that it doesn't come true for you!

Charting BBT is different for everyone, some women (myself included) like the control it gives you. I don't spend hours every day wondering what's going on, I know where I am in my cycle, I know I'm ovulating, I know I have a good LP (luteal phase) length, etc...that knowledge gives me some control over an otherwise out of conrol situation.

But Charitng bbt for some ladies is too much stress, they agonize over what their temp will be the next morning, sometimes to the point that they wake up too early and their temp is off anyway. and charting your btt can lead to over-analyzation which can be stressful as well. so really the only thing to do is to try it and see how you react, or if you know you'll over react then perhaps its not for you. Just know that if you don't chart your body can "fake ovulation" and you'll never know. it's possible to get all the signs, (Fertile CM and CP and positive opk's, even ovulation pain) but your body may not actually release the egg. the only way to know that is to chart your bbt or get BW done by the doctor.

Reading Taking Charge of your fertility will help a lot with these questions and help you to get more familiar with all the signs your body is giving you. good luck!

  • The drug is called DES, and it was a synthetic estrogen given between 1938 - 1971 to women considered high risk for MC.  My GM was an identical twin, and even though GM had 7 healthy pregnancies with no MC, her twin had 8 MCs and only one succesful pregnancy.

They've only done one study on my generation, and found nothing conclusive, but in lab animals, the third generation (i said it incorrectly earlier) had a severe increase in vaginal and cervical cancer.  My symptoms started appearing when I was 22, and that's really early - had the HPV test done and it was neg, but even if it had been pos, it would be early for symptoms to show considering i hadn't been sexually active very long and I've been with DH since we were 16.

Thank you for your good wishes, but I'm in good spirits.  Today and tomorrow waiting for my dr to call are about as down as I get, but that's to be expected I guess.

I really do need to get that book.  Hello Amazon!

  • The way you described it, that's how O pains feel for me, too.

Thanks ladies!  You've made me regain my sanity!

  • That is exactly what my O pain feels like.
