Too many toys - storage?

Seriously, does your DC have too many toys?  I feel like we have way too many and so many redundant toys...like Little People, fire trucks, etc.  I have put some away in bins but I fear they will never come out again...he never plays with them but is not too old for them.  Waht do you do?

  • We have bins (I really like the mini Itso bins from Target b/c they're shallow enough that DD can reach inside of them and there's not an overwhelming # of toys in each one).

I also make it a point to bring out different toys. Today we played with blocks b/c they've gotten pushed to the back and haven't been played with in a while. So mostly, it's my job to bring out different toys.

And yes, we have waaaaay too many toys. I should buy stock in Fisher Price and Melissa & Doug.

  • It's funny you posted this because I was just thinking something very similar.

DD has the weeble castle and the little people farm that I know she's not too old for but she doesn't play with them anymore.  I keep telling DH that I am going to go through her toys but I just have a hard time with it.  Plus, I dread putting the toys in storage for the basement because our basement is already an overflowing mess.

I have one of those storage bins that has 4 "shelves" with 12 bins.  I really like having that for toy storage but it doesn't hold the bigger items.  I usually just sit those around the organizer.   I also have a big trunk that sits underneath the window in the playroom.  So, it serves as a window seat but I keep DD's dress up clothes in that.  The bad thing I'm finding with that though is that because the clothes are out of sight, she doesn't play with them.

  • I don't like having a ton of toys. DS has two toy areas. His room, and one corner of the TV room. He is allowed to have 3 or 4 things in the TV room area (right now, a Little People garage, big ball, a drum, and some blocks) and everything else has to be in his room. When the storage areas in his room get too full, or we don't have room for something, we take things to Goodwill. We kind of have a one in, one out type policy. I am wanting to get some large shelves for DS's room to reorganize his room toys. That would give him the flexibility to have more stuff in there.

  • Also, his smaller stuff is kept in clear bins so he can see what is in there. I periodically bring out stuff that he hasn't played with to see if he doen't like it anymore, or if he has just forgotten about it.

  • I have the plastic pull out drawer storage things and then I label the outsides (little people, cars, doll clothes, blocks, etc..)

I also split the other random toys into several storage bins and rotate them out every few weeks or when she gets bored with things.

  • We have the storage bin system from Ikea that is a very nice way to get toys out of the way but keep them accessible for (almost 4yo) dd.  But most importantly we don't have a lot of toys.  We live in a very small Manhattan apartment, so we are forced to keep our toy collection very small.  Based on what I've seen of my suburban friends, we probably have about 25% of most people's toy collections.  For example, the only Little People item we own is the farm.  You just have to be really good about getting rid of the stuff they won't use - which is usually most of it.
