We had one of our nephews first communion mass today, and my morning sickness decided to make a re-appearance during the middle of the mass. I whispered to DH that I wasn't feeling well, and he said "Eat a piece of candy". Now DHs family is pretty darn traditional, and eating before church, much less during is a big no-no - but I thought eating one small piece of candy wouldn't be a big deal.
I unwrapped the candy during one of the songs (so it wasn't loud) and popped it in my mouth while people were standing (so no one would see). Well, I guess my MIL was watching me from across the room at that very moment because I got told after church. LMAO! I can only laugh about it, because she really drives me nuts. I told her I wasn't feeling well, but she didn't care. Oh well. What can you do?
Re: LOL MIL
Well, I can see how it would have been better if you had puked on the ppl sitting in front of you...
hehe
Old school rules, "You need an empty stomach to receive the Body of Christ" this was drilled into our heads in Catholic grade school too. Normally, a person would say "its ok, you are pregnant" but MIL popped out 10 kids and followed all the Catholic guilt (I mean rules) so she thinks we all should.
Yeah, I was raised Catholic, but consider myself a recovering "Cath-a-holic" - as does DH.
I was raised Catholic, and I was under the impression that pregnant women, children, the elderly, and anyone with a medical condition was exempt from that kind of thing?
That being said, I have some pretty extreme great aunts that sound like they would get along super well with your MIL. According to my Aunt Helen, I should be shunned because I have tattoos and lived in sin. This is the same woman who cuts all the seatbelts in her cars so she doesn't get decapitated in an accident. Sigh.
exactly!
You should let your MIL know that according to the church you are exempt from the fasting rules, because you are pregnant.
As far as other people's responses, let's not turn this into a Catholic Church is the devil thread.
First off, the Catholic Church is not a bible only church so this argument means little or nothing to the church. Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition are both important to our faith.
Secondly, if you read the bible you will see that sanctity of fasting throughout the old and new testament.
