Baby Names

Do you think Ava can be a nickname for Avery?

I love the name Ava, but its just so popular now. Also like Avery... so what you think about Avery for a full name but then using Ava as a nickname?
Also, some "meanings" show up as the name means elf counsel - what??!!
Would a "meaning" deter you from naming your child a name you like?

Re: Do you think Ava can be a nickname for Avery?

  • I like Avery and Ava. I would have used Avery if I had a girl, regardless of the meaning (which I looked up and didn't love but oh well).

I do not think Ava is a nickname for Avery. It's a totally separate name. Nice try though! GL!

I don't care for either name and meanings don't mean much to me unless they are really bad. Ava is not a nn for Avery.?

  • I think if you want to use Ava as a name on its own, then use it. It's not a nn for Avery.
    Blank!
  • I have a friend that spelled it like this, Avarie.  Ava could be a nn for this.

Ok- so you can mispell Avery and then make up/force a nn for it. LOL

(sorry, before anyone says anything, I'm sure this is a real "alternative" spelling. don't go googling it and calling me out, Wink)

  • for me- it is a silly nickname for avery

and if you think avery is not popular, you should think again :) they are both very popular, so go with the one you love

This.  I would guess that Avery is even more popular than Ava.

  • thanks for everyone's opinions. I didnt realize people would be snarky even on the names board, lol! I appreciate and like the avarie suggestion - thank you.

ps... on the ssa.gov website, ava is listed #4 in popularity and avery is #48...

  • I think you could use Ava as a nn for Avery.  However, a goofy meaning would probably deter me from using a name I liked.  Does Ava have a better meaning?  Maybe you'd be better off going with that, despite its popularity.
  • I think if you love Ava, you should just use it, it's lovely. I don't really think it would be a natural nn for Avery, which I like a little less since i have only known boys named Avery.

Also the meaning is important to me. I liked Cameron initially but it means crooked nose and I just could not do it.

Some people on this board have strong opinions about "made up names", "alternative spellings" and things like that. Don't take it too seriously there are also people who give more tempered opinions.

I didn't even know which post was being referred to. I just say that some people here have strong opinions about that made up or unusual stuff. I still value everyone's opinion because you will get all these same opinions from the people your child meets too. I loved the help I got from everyone picking our name that we are likely using . Don't be offended.
