NPR: Job Interview question/situation?

Hi everyone, I was just at the park and was talking to a girlfirend.  I'd appreciate any/all thoughts and takes on this situation of my friend's DH.

About 2-3wks ago he was contacted by a recruiter for a position in another company.  Usually he doesn't interview but thought it actually sounded like an interesting/good opportunity so he went and interviewed.  Hit it off with the first person really well, an SVP.  The guy would ultimately be his boss.  Within two days got contacted and asked to come in and meet the president.  Good interview again, and closing with the pres saying he wanted friend's DH to come in and meet more people.  Totally talking as if they'd be scheduling something shortly.

That last interview was a week ago Thursday and nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  He's left one message, on Wed, with the recruiter just to say hey, but no return phone call.
Thoughts?  Even if they found the world's greatest other candidate don't you think they'd call him back?

What would be your next step, if any? and when?

I was at a loss for advice.  Thanks!

Re: NPR: Job Interview question/situation?

  • My mom went for an interview on Friday and was told they would call her Monday either way and let her know.  She didn't hear anything at all.  She called on Tuesday and never got a call back.  She actually interviewed with a friend of mine and my friend called me late Wednesday night to ask me for my Mom's # because couldn't find it and meant to call her before she left work.  I gave it to her and she told me they were offering her the position.

Maybe they were just really busy and haven't had a chance to call him back.  My friend said she hadn't gotten back to my mom because they were finishing up some last minute interviews.

  • I hate to say it, but it sounds like he didn't get the job. I had this happen to me once. I made the second interview round and then heard nothing, left a message, no one got back. They don't have an obligation call you back, and I've heard a lot of companies won't. If they wanted to hire someone, they'd most likely tell that person within a day or 2 or even a matter of hours (that's how it was my job experiences, anyway). There were probably just tons of applicants, and while they liked him, they may have liked someone else just .1% more.
  • I think it's fine if he did not get the job, but to go totally cold?  Especially when you're sitting down with the SVP and President of the company to lead a division of a company.  Not to mention, the recruiter found him.   I guess to me it's a courtesy thing more than anything.  How big a deal is a call saying, thanks we filled the position?  Oh well.

    Just seeing this thread now.

First off, was it an outside recruiter? Meaning, it was someone outside the company who alerted him to the position? If so, he is the person responsible for letting the guy know if he was awarded the position or not. Also, I use the word "responsible" gingerly here because there is no set-in-stone protocol for this.. it's just nice if the recruiter follows through.

I know when we bring on researchers/scientists/doctors/whatever (into our family organization, not where I work), it can often take up to 2 weeks for us to get back to the individual.

  • I believe the recruiter works for the company.  Who knows, maybe they call next week, maybe they never hear from them again.  Thanks for your input!

Well, hopefully they'll do the decent thing and contact him one way or the other.

    GL to him!
