Someone will probably flame me, but I'm kind of annoyed by the hype. Yes, she has a great voice and it's a great story, but seriously. It's not the second-coming of Sara Brightman.
I heard someone say that "I Dreamed a Dream" is such a hard song to sing. No, it's not. It was a recital piece and a pageant piece for me. It's really not that difficult.

I haven't been following the hype, but I do agree that focusing on her looks is really obnoxious. ?Just give the woman a contract and let her sing. ?Unattractive people can be talented, too. ?
Our society's obsession w/ looks is pathetic if we've really gotten to the point when we are shocked that an unattractive person can have a beautiful singing voice.
I completely agree. I was just saying to someone the other day that if she was a pretty girl who got up there and sang like that, then we would not even have heard about it. The only reason it's "hyped up" is because of her looks. And FWIW, I thought she was good but not great.
I think the positive hype is all about her looks as well. I don't think anyone would have cared if she was a beautiful or even just average looking woman with the same voice. So... it's not about her voice... IMO. I wasn't impressed with her voice.
I don't think she would have got through if she was pretty. She's a good singer but nothing spectacular...I think people just got a fright that she could sing after her being so batty before the song started...She's a bit of a nut And thats what got her through.

I'm cynical -- I think Susan Boyle and the show's producers are more savvy than they are letting on. I think she did a wonderful job with the song and is clearly talented, but I also think she played up the dowdy, loopy aspect on purpose. Clearly she has had professional voice training and has performed publicly before -- there is no way she would have not been "coached" on what to wear, how to appear in a performance. Her appearance and everything she said was well thought out in advance, and frankly it was a brilliant strategic move. Look at the attention she's getting.

You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.

If all you were to hear was an audio of her song, and not a video, nobody would even know who she was.
She is definitely a very talented singer, but there are lots of talented singers in the world.
