Jack Daniels for teething?!?!

Correct me if I?m wrong, but I always though this was an old wife?s tale from years ago and now people know this is bad for babies? A friend of my mothers just told my mom they are rubbing Jack Daniels on her 3 month old grandson?s gums b/c he is fussy and they think he is teething. She said it works.

Both my mom and I find this a little disturbing. Do we just have the wrong idea about this or is this something they should not be doing?

I love my crazy child!

  • I don't think it's an Old Wive's Tale- I think it's just old fashioned, before people knew drinking during your pregnancy isn't the best idea. I think it's odd someone this day and age would actually go that route.

  • I know when I was a kid, that was the norm and obviously now we know it isnt the best thing to do!  My MIL gave my son wine last easter when he was about 8 months old.  She insisted there was nothing wrong with a child having a bit of alcohol for a "special occasion" because that is what she did when my DH was little.  SERIOUSLY??  So there are people out there that really believe that giving alcohol to babies in whatever form is okay.  Astonishing really.....

  • Not an old wive's tale. ?But also something that's not common practice today. ?(nor should it be).?

My grandmother told me stories about putting whiskey in my mom's bottle when she was inconsolable. ?Nothing like getting the baby hammered to calm them down! ? ?

  • Well, I don't see anything wrong with it.  Yes, it's kind of an old-fashioned thing to do, but I certainly don't think it will harm babies.  The whiskey makes their gums a little tingly, just like Orajel.  And the amount is so minute that it won't have any other effect.

As for giving wine on special occasions, I don't see a problem with that either.  Wine is a very important part of our religion, so at holidays, when we say the blessing over it, we give DS a sip.  Big deal.  At his circumcision, we gave him a piece of gauze soaked in wine to suck on while it was performed - that is a centuries-old tradition.

    Ah-my new best friend.

We are in good company-the babes had a fingertip of wine for Passover. Smile

Haha, after giving DS a sip of wine at the seder, he kept demanding more.  What kind of kid actually likes the taste of wine???  So we had to cut him off and end up giving him grape juice instead Wink

  • Vanilla extract has virtually the same effect as whiskey.  I rubbed that on my DD's gums and it helped her with teething.

We had the same thing with DD at our seder!

While the idea of whiskey on the gums is kind of old fashioned, I really don't find it shocking or think it's so terrible. It's just a little alcohol rubbed on the gums...it's not like they're doing shots.

um, you do realize that Vanilla extract is 35% alcohol, or 70 proof?  But I'm also of the camp that thinks it's o.k. so...party on!

  • I'm older than the majority of the people here, and my family swears they did this to us as kids, and never thought anything was wrong with it. They thought that not only would it ease the teething pain, but hey, if it made us a little happy or sleepy, all the better! We were just talking about it when everyone was here for DS's birthday. They also started rice cereal at 2 weeks old, put blankets in our beds, and (gasp!) had no carseats!

Parenting has changed a lot in 40 years!

  • Honestly, I don't think it is a good idea.  There was an article on MSN this week that discussed this topic, along with other things that a baby could put in their mouth.  Alcohol was pretty high on the list of things that could possibly cause harm to the child.  The article addressed the weight difference of a child and an adult, and how just a little bit of alcohol can result in side affects for the child.  I just think there are other things to use for teething that are much safer.  Part of the reason parenting has changed so much is because of the products available.
