Correct me if I?m wrong, but I always though this was an old wife?s tale from years ago and now people know this is bad for babies? A friend of my mothers just told my mom they are rubbing Jack Daniels on her 3 month old grandson?s gums b/c he is fussy and they think he is teething. She said it works.
Both my mom and I find this a little disturbing. Do we just have the wrong idea about this or is this something they should not be doing?
Re: Jack Daniels for teething?!?!
Not an old wive's tale. ?But also something that's not common practice today. ?(nor should it be).?
My grandmother told me stories about putting whiskey in my mom's bottle when she was inconsolable. ?Nothing like getting the baby hammered to calm them down! ? ?

Well, I don't see anything wrong with it. Yes, it's kind of an old-fashioned thing to do, but I certainly don't think it will harm babies. The whiskey makes their gums a little tingly, just like Orajel. And the amount is so minute that it won't have any other effect.
As for giving wine on special occasions, I don't see a problem with that either. Wine is a very important part of our religion, so at holidays, when we say the blessing over it, we give DS a sip. Big deal. At his circumcision, we gave him a piece of gauze soaked in wine to suck on while it was performed - that is a centuries-old tradition.
Ah-my new best friend.
We are in good company-the babes had a fingertip of wine for Passover.
Haha, after giving DS a sip of wine at the seder, he kept demanding more. What kind of kid actually likes the taste of wine??? So we had to cut him off and end up giving him grape juice instead
We had the same thing with DD at our seder!
While the idea of whiskey on the gums is kind of old fashioned, I really don't find it shocking or think it's so terrible. It's just a little alcohol rubbed on the gums...it's not like they're doing shots.
um, you do realize that Vanilla extract is 35% alcohol, or 70 proof? But I'm also of the camp that thinks it's o.k. so...party on!
I'm older than the majority of the people here, and my family swears they did this to us as kids, and never thought anything was wrong with it. They thought that not only would it ease the teething pain, but hey, if it made us a little happy or sleepy, all the better! We were just talking about it when everyone was here for DS's birthday. They also started rice cereal at 2 weeks old, put blankets in our beds, and (gasp!) had no carseats!
