Is this reflux???

Miles has been a pretty sleepy newborn so far, what with his jaundice and just the fact that I guess DS infants are sleepier in the early weeks than infants who don't have it.

We've been waking him to feed him, and the past couple feedings now he's spit up afterward. Just now I heard this kind of wheezing/choking noise from the other room and he's in there choking up on his own spitup.

What are the signs of reflux? I read that infants with DS can be prone to it but have no experience with it. Sorry. This post is rambling.?

  • he's nursing okay, right? ?Does he pull off while nursing and cry, or arch his back at all after eating? ?

Ethan was reflux-y, but I don't think it started that early. ?

  • L did that, sort of choked on his own spit-up, but he never spit up a ton or anything.  He was a painful refluxer.  He arched his back...woke about an hour after eating, screaming in pain, seemed very uncomfortable.

They say there are "happy spitters" -- or babies who have reflux & it doesn't really bother them...they just spit up a lot.

    HTH.

  • oh, and we didn't notice symptoms until probably about 3 weeks...by 8 weeks it was beyond obvious he had reflux.  (well to us...the doctors were a different story...but I digress...) I'd just watch it for a bit if it doesn't seem to be bothering him.
  • Yeah it doesn't seem to be giving him any pain. I think we're going to try to have him sleep propped up in the Boppy tonight just to be safe though. Thanks ladies!

According to this wheezing can be a symptom of reflux.  My children didn't exactly have reflux...they were pukers.  My dd would throw up her feedings all over the floor (and me) within 10 minutes of eating.  If he seems really uncomfortable, I would call the pedi. in the morning to see if they have any suggestions for you.

  • My DD's reflux symptoms didn't start 'til about 2.5-3 weeks.

I'd prop him slightly on his side with rolled up blankets or elevate his head a little.

  • No clue about the reflex, but just wanted to say congrats!
  • First of all, I wanted to extend my congratulations to you and your baby boy! He's gorgeous and he chose you to be his mommy. You'll do wonderfully with him. Smile

Now, being a PP RN I can tell you that reflux doesn't usually start this early. I'd keep an eye on him and if propping him up tonight makes you feel better, go right ahead. Just watch it and let you ped know if you're really concerned. GL!

  • DD#2 was a little bit reflux-y, but like the other posters' kids the symptoms didn't appear until a little while later, like 3-4 weeks. She did a lot of grunting and groaning and squirming around while sleeping. It was not serious aside from the fact her grunty-groaniness kept us awake! I'm betting tonight's incident with your DS was just a little isolated spit-up thing.

Also, I'm a big lurker and don't post super-often, so you probably don't "know" me very well, but I always tend to agree with your POV and sense of humor on here. I just wanted to say, I have been thinking about you all night. Your post earlier brought me to tears and I can't imagine the rollercoaster you and your family have been on this week. Your DS is beautiful and is truly a blessing, and will continue to be a blessing in your life forever. I wish you and your family all the warm, good wishes you all need and deserve right now. I know you've gotten like 9 million messages and posts from people you "know" better, but I don't think I could go to sleep tonight without telling you I was thinkng of you, too. So there's message number 9 million and one!

  • Addie occasionally spits up after she eats or somewhat chokes when she's eating because she sucks so hard and my letdown is pretty powerful at first. Two months in we still have a sleepy newborn, the cardiologist we saw for her heart murmur said it was due to her murmur.
  • If he has reflux try keeping him at a 45 degree angle or higher for at least 30-45 min after he eats. Either hold him or put him in a bouncy seat or car seat (they are all 45 degree angles). This gives him time to digest the food so it doesn't come back up. GL
