S/O - Personalized items with your name...

I think it's funny in the "Do you like your name" post how so many people commented on the importance of being able to find personalized pencils, keychains, etc!!  I always liked finding those things when I was young too.

So many people now are doing unique names or different spellings that a lot of kids won't be able to get those things anymore.  Unless the companies that make them stalk baby name boards like this one!! LOL

  • The nice thing is that now we have the internet.  So I'm guessing there are websites that will let you choose what name to put on pencils, etc.  It did stink not being able to find anything with my name on it when I was a kid.

This is true. You can get anything w/ any name on it nowadays.

  • When I was growing up, there was NEVER anything with my name on it. I don't think it as an issue now since you can order almost anything but I hated it as a kid. But I love my name and always have.
  • I could never find anything with my name on it when I was young.  Which is funny because my name comes up on here all the time in debates about whether certain names are too popular.

Madeleine will never find anything with her name spelled correctly unless she moves to France.

  • I third the comment about the internet as a resource.

The other thing is that I've looked for things for my nephew - EDWARD - and it's hard to find.

So there's really not a name that you can guarantee the gift shops will have.

Right there's the internet, but what was fun for me when I was a little girl was looking around in the stores and finding the personalized things, especially when I was on vacation like at Disneyland or Sea World. Most of the time it was just a thrill to find MY name, even if my parents didn't buy me the item. I remember going to the Magic Kingdom with my friend when I was 9 and I felt bad for her (Carinne) because she couldn't find any personalized gifts.?This always stuck with me and I think it's a reason why I tend to like more traditional names. Also, a 7 year old isn't searching the internet for personalized pencils and keychains.

  • I always told myself I wouldn't name my kid anything I couldn't find on a pencil/keychain but alas, I did. It's not a strange name, it's not uncommon but I have never seen it on anything.

I can just see the Disney Land gift shop having Aaliyah, Ahleah, Alea, Aleah, Aden, Aiden, Aidan, Ayden, etc. That would be a big asss area they'd have to keep their keychains in!?

My cousin is named Alana and one of my closest friends is named Alana. I'm surprised that you don't find pencils/keychains. It's not uncommon at all. I like the name! ?

It's not weird or anything. We're very pleased with our choice. Are you friend and cousin "uh-LAW-nuh" like DD is?

Hi, LMS, my fellow late night Nestie! Which other boards do you post on? I always see you here.?

My friends pronounces it that way. I like it pronounced that way too.?

LOL Yes, I'm here and I should be in bed, but I'm a night owl. I post on everything from the pet board, fashion and beauty, cooking, SAHM, baby shower, etc... Anything that sparks my interest. I lurke the Multiples board. Those women inspire me!

  • I have always felt that this logic was silly (although I have a name that was always fairly easy to find in gift shops, so maybe that's why I feel this way).  I think that all names have become more unique and also I don't know if you have been in many gift shops lately, but a lot of places will charge like $1 or include "free personalization" where someone will just paint the name or embroider the name on the item.  I've noticed that is more of a trend now than it was when we were kids.

Also, I can see that the act of finding your name can be fun, but I am not a very big fan of these types of souvenirs, so I'm hoping my kid won't be trying to buy them and bring them home - they just take up space anyway!

It's funny that everyone seems to consider this when they are naming - I think it was really a trend when we were kids (a rack of souvenirs personalized with names) and it is not as big of a deal now.

  • My DH's Aunt actually told me that we shouldn't spell my DD's name with a C b/c  we'd never find her name anything and that she hate us for it (she also said that it was a "weird" way to spell Catherine)...I laughed and didn't take it any further, as it's pointless to argue with the ignorant.   I never found my name on pencils so I guess it was never a big deal to me, but now everytime I see her name on something I laugh to myself, not to mention we live in the south, you can find a monograming store on every corner.
  • I rarely found anything with my name on it (though I could find stuff labeled Tony).  My sister couldn't either.  I don't think either of us are scarred for it.  As I've gotten older, I appreciate the uniqueness of my name more and more. (I still don't like it much, but I do appreciate that I rarely get "Toni who?" or "Which Toni?" - except from my own mother now since my sister married a TonyStick out tongue)
  • My name is Lorena, so yeah I never found anything with my name on it! It kind of did bother me sometimes but i don't think it was too huge of a deal.

How weird. I've always found my name on stuff and never hated the spelling. What a weirdo, you spelled it right.?
