WDYT of the name Rourke for a boy? I like boy names that aren't overly used but that people have heard before. I can't get the clicky poll to work for some reason. TIA!
It was the name of the little boy in The River Wild with Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon. It's also a chess piece so I think it's a somewhat common name and wouldn't be as worried about people not knowing how to pronounce it.

I've never heard this name before. I don't even know how to pronounce it.?
It rhymes w/ pork. Like the actor, Mickey Rourke.
I would have pronounced it like Row-urke. I just googled Mickey Rourke. I still have no idea who he is. I don't watch boxing and I've never heard of him before. Is he really famous?
It's a surname but could be used as a 1st name. it reminds me of Mickey Rourke. I think most people know how to pronounce it. It's certainly an uncommon name, doesnt even come up on babynames.com.

um yes, he just won an Oscar for a movie about boxing.

I feel like an idiot! I am obviously not into movies/tv at.all. I would assume most people would know how to pronounce Rourke since he is famous.
I think southerners would pronounce it Row-urke, which is still considered correct. DH didn't really like this name and it sounds like most people are on his side so I'll ditch it. I've just always been drawn to this name.

The name is NMS, but I wanted to say that I think even southerners would know how to pronounce it. I saw it and immediatly though "Mickey Rourke".
How about Roark? Then you can feasibly reference Howard Roark, from Ayn Rand's very famous work, The Fountainhead. Plus you avoid the problem of people who might not be able to...figure out the pronunciation of Rourke?
I have always liked the name Roark because I have always loved the character of Howard Roark. I don't think it's too harsh.

Re: Rourke
Don't like it. It sounds harsh to me.

Sorry for all the posts in a row. Forget the chess piece thing. That's a rook that I was thinking of.
I didn't think of this name as that uncommon. Hmmm...
