piercing question

i think it is absolutely adorable when baby girls have their ears pierced, but i would feel like a 'mean mommy' doing this to my DD for my own aesthetic pleasures. just curious how many of you out there think it is mean to pierce a baby's ears and/or how old you would have the baby be before you did it? not for sure that im going to do it...just curious. thanks.

Re: piercing question

  • My ears were pierced when I was an infant. So were my sister's.  I don't remember the pain. ;)

This actually isn't something I haven't thought of or talk to DH about ... good idea to bring it up just to think about, though. =)

I'll do the same thing this time around that I did with DD.  She can have them when she's old enough to ask for them and have some kind of understanding.

I don't like piercings on babies.  They don't always grow out to stay centered either.  (yes, I KNOW some of you were lucky.  That doesn't mean it always works out).

  • I will do it. Honestly, its not that much different than having your son circ'd. I know the reasons are different but its still inflicting unnecessary pain.

But I will still do it.

  • I don't thinks it's mean at all. The baby cries for all of 2 minutes and then she's over it. Plus if you do it when they're infants they're less likely to play with it and risk getting an infection. I plan to do it at 6 months.

how, and seriously why does it bother you?

  • My mom pierced mine at 3 months b/c I looked like a boy. Even when wearing a dress people would still say "what a cute boy"..the comments didn't stop after my mom pierced my ears :) When I have a girl I plan on getting the pierced when she is a few months old.
  • I agree with Taelir.  I remember getting mine done at like 7.  It was a bonding day with my twin (i'm an identical) and my Mom.

Plus, I don't really agree with making infants and toddlers look older.  So, why the jewelery?  I just don't think it is cute.  IMO.

  • I've always thought it's best to wait until your daughter is old enough to ask for it.  What if she doesn't want holes in her ears when she's older?  Just my opinion.......

    imageimageimageimage
  • My mom had mine done when I was an infant.  But back then, doctors pierced them.  I don't know how comfortable I would be going to Claire's.
  • I'm against piercing infants.  I think that it's unnecessary pain and I think she should have the choice to do it when she's older.  I also just don't like the look of a baby with pierced ears.

My pedi does them in her office so if I have a girl, pedi will do the piercings. I wouldn't bring my baby to the mall for that...

Doctor's will still do it.  I plan on doing it if i have a girl and I want my pediatrician to do it otherwise she can wait.  Now having it done to little boys pisses me off!!!!!

  • My Mom took me to the mall when I was 5 or so.   I'll wait until the kid asks for them.
  • Whenever I have a daughter, I will wait for her to ask. I was 5 when I wanted my ears pierced and I still remember going to the store with my mom.

  • I won't until they are old enough to ask in a complete sentence AND care for them.  I don't think I judge moms when I see it on infants, I know many women consider it a cultural thing, but having had an infant, there's enough to worry about.  My neighbor's kid had to have eye surgery at 12 months and one hole partially closed.  If there is an infection/allergy to medal, fevers are worse for such small kids.  and it's purely about looks.  I want my girls to make those decisions for themselves- not send the message that their physical beauty is a concern of mine,,,

For real! Some people are so dumb..who dresses their boys in all pink and dresses!! Come on people!

It totally depends on how you feel about it..to each their own..  I prob wont..but see nothing wrong with it Wink

  • Nope.

I just don't like the way it looks on infants & toddlers.

  • Nope, I won't (well, I'm having a boy so it doesn't really matter now).

I didn't get mine pierced until I was 15 (just didn't care til then, I guess! haha)

I personally don't like the way it looks on babies. Too showy/flashy IMO.

  • I am a lurker on this board, but I wanted to jump in here. My ears were pierced when I was an infant. I do not remember it. To this day though I hate I mean HATE any kinds of needles and have a very low tolerance for pain (yes, I am going to have a lot of fun in a few months, I know). I don't like unnecessary needles/pain for myself, and had my ears not been pierced when I was an infant, I would not have pierced ears today. I am sooooo glad my mom had mine pierced when I was an infant. I do not remember it. And I am glad I get to wear earrings :) If we ever have a daughter we plan to pierce her ears as an infant, just in case she inherits her mother's intense fear of needles/pain later in life. Plus we think earrings on infant girls is adorable as well.

    Yeah...that was odd...badge patrol, i guess!

  • I plan to wait until she is old enough to ask to get it done (10 or so, I guess?) and then let her make the decision.

  • Mine were pierced young and I dont remember a thing!Cool

  • Nope.  I remember it being a big thing for me when I got my ears pierced.  I think I was 10 and I was super excited and, as someone else mentioned, it was a bonding/girl day for my mom and me.  I'd like my daughter (if it's a girl) to get the opportunity to make that decision for herself.

    ?

I'm with taelir. It's just more to scroll through and slightly irritating. I don't know how to fix it, which is why I don't have any badges myself.?

  • I don't think it's wrong to pierce a baby ears. Honestlypiercing a 7 year olds is worse because they can't take care of it properly, like my niece, who got infections from it. But when it's a baby you can make sure that your daughters ears are properly taken care of! I don't know that I'll do it if I have a girl, but I think baby girls are precious with pierced ears.

Go to edit profile where you placed the badges, and then make sure the codes for each badge are 1 right next to the other, no spaces between them, that way they come out like mine!

  • I had DD's ears pierced when she was an infant and to be honest I am happy I did it then versus now because she is scared to death of needles.

yeahhh because god forbid we have to scroll down an extra centimeter to click on reply Confused  still havent had anyone tell me how to fix it so unless you want to share your magnificent html abilities...it stays the way it is i guess. i am here to talk about pregnancy, not critique others' badge setups. wow.

  • I havent decided yet.  I had mine done as an infant, but I am really not into earrings and never wear them.  I'm on the fence, but dont personally have anything against getting them done on an infant.  Its not that much unlike getting a boy circ'd, since that isnt required and is mostly aestetic too.

  • I had both of my girls ears pierced when they were babies because I thought it was cute and  it was a PAIN in the butt!  They didn't heal correctly :(  I am going to skip that with this LO and wait until she is old enough to ask and take care of them.  Thats just me though.
  • When she (or he) is old enough to ask and care for them.  I would probably make them wait a few months even after asking, just so they are sure.  I hate the way earrings look on infants.
  • If I have a little girl she'll have to wait until she's old enough to ask for them and take care of them (of course, with a little help).  I was 9 when I had mine done and I survived the first 9 years without earrings.  And much like a baby, I don't remember the "pain" of having them done.

  • thanks for all of your opinions! i also had mine pierced when i was 6 or 7 and i remember begging my mom and what a fun day it was. also i just want to say that im not about trying to make the infant/toddler look older or flashy, i just think it's cute. i think it is something i will probably decide when i actually have the baby and decide if it's actually a priority at that time. so we'll see.

also i fixed my badges so they take up less space. soooo sorry to those of you who were annoyed/irritated by it.

  • NMS, but i dont think it's any more "mean" than circumcision. I definetly don't think the pain will scar your baby for life or anything.

  • If I have a girl I will pierce her ears as early as the doctor will let me. I think it's better to do early so they dont remember the pain.

My mother did my sisters ears around 6 or 7 and she cried the entire day about it. The sound of the gun scared her. And not to mention back then they only did one at a time so you can just imagine how hard it was trying to get the other one done!
