Creative way to use my mother's name?

My mother died three years ago from cancer. I would like to try to use her name, for either first or middle, if we have a girl. Any great ideas for creatively using the name Mary? Or are we better off simply leaving it as is?

I would use Mary for a middle name. Why do you want to change it??
  • I'm not crazy about using Mary as a first name, DH really isn't, but thought maybe people had seen different forms of Mary that I may like more.

  • Mary is too plain for me, so I'd go for a related name like Malia, Manya, Maren, Marian, Marilyn, Marla, Maryann, Maura, Maureen, May, Miriam, Molly, Muriel, Marisela, Marlisa, Maya or Rosemary.
  • I am also considering using a different (read:  less plain) version of Mary to honor someone.

We like Mariana, Marielle, Marina, Marie, and Marysia (marie-see-uh).

  • Great ideas! Thank you!

  • I like the idea of using Mary as a middle name, but it depends on the first name choices that you have

  • I'm not expecting, but your question hits home, as I have a similar "dilemma." Our mothers' names are Karen and Mary. I'm not really a fan of either as a middle name, but I like the idea of incorporating them. I would use Kara instead of Karen and Meredith instead of Mary - at least they start with the same sound, right?

  • don't know if you are Irish, but Maeve is a celtic form of Mary.
  • My DH and I have picked Rachel Mara or Mara Rachel for a girl name because our mother's names are Leah and Ruth. We picked two other female names from the same Biblical stories. Just an idea!

  • I think Mary could work as a mn, depending on the fn. I also really like Mariana and Marielle. They tend to flow better w/ more fn's.

Also, Molly is a form of Mary. I love that as a first name too.

  • Mary is classic. I'd leave it as is. If you insist on messing with it, I'd do Mary Anne. But seriously, I;d leave it.

  • I like Mary, but if you want to honor her without giving your daughter the exact same name, I'd use Maren or a double fn- i.e. Mary Faith, Mary Kate, etc.
