Jumperoos can delay development?

I've done some research on this and am now thinking that I may be returning LO's jumperoo due to the delay of motor skills development and other problems that could occur. A lot of pedis are even ruling them out.

Have you heard of this and what do you know about it?

Re: Jumperoos can delay development?

  • ask stella's pedi.  he apparently knows it all.
  • Loading the player...
  • yes, absolutely.  soon after i put DS in his jumper, he began chewing on his feet.  and then, THIS happened:

sigh...  i don't think i'll ever get his mouth shut again.

  • My pedi said they are fine as long as they are used in moderation (no more than twenty minutes at a time).

  • Like everything else, moderation is the key.  You shouldn't leave your baby in the jumper or exersaucer for hours every day.  But it's great to have something to entertain your baby and keep him safe in one spot while you have to cook or put laundry in.

FWIW, we have a jumper and my baby is already crawling and pulling herself up so it certainly hasn't hurt her motor skills.

  • I think it's a matter of how it's used.  If you leave kiddo in it for long periods - that's bad for a lot of reasons.  Used for short periods here and there - probably ok.  That said, I don't have one or anything similar and don't plan to get one.

  • I haven't done any research on this, but the sheer joy that DD gets from using the jumperoo at daycare is too much for me to take away from her.  She has to share with the other kids, so she's really not in it much anyway.  Like all parenting tips/worries . . . everything in moderation.

BW: I LOVE the pic of your DS and his open mouth.  :)

can you believe i would ever put him in something that would make that happy?!?!  stupid jumper.

  • We had a jumperoo for Teagan before all this stuff came out about it causing delays in development.  Teagan crawled at 7 months, walked at 10 months.  She talks like no other (her new word is crotch...how proud am I! lol).  Not sure how this delayed her, but I would say that it is fine to use.  We have one for Kelsey and plan on letting her in it as long as she is happy.

    This is GREAT!

  • my pedi never mentioned anything about it, but i did notice that since i put DD in hers, she started interacting with the toys. Before she could care less about anything i would put in front of her. She has the Precious Planet jumper and loves it! She yells at the parrot and the banana that hang down and she actually moves the spinny toys and everything. She's constantly babbling away while in it.
  • Yes, if you put your LO in it for hours on end. My SIL put my nephew in his all the time, she'd get up put him in it and go back to bed. He spent most of his day in his watching tv. He's almost 4 and is behind developmentally on most things. Just use common sense.

  • Like everything I think moderation is the key.  We just got one the other day because I need something to put DS in downstairs.  He no longer likes the swing and if I put him on his playmat he rolls all over the place.

  • Like pp said- everything in moderation. My oldest LOVED the jumperoo...it was the only thing he's tolerate for more than 5 minutes so I could get something done around the house. He crawled & walked just fine! I'm going to get it out of the attic for B in the next few weeks.
