Later pg & baby's size

I was just wondering how doctors can tell approx. how big the baby is later in pg. I hear some people say that their doctors think the baby is 6lbs and others 9lbs, would an u/s need to be done for the doctor to know this or do they base it on the size of your belly?

Re: Later pg & baby's size

  • I think that they base it on your belly measurments in later pg.  When I was pg with DS, my Dr predicted that he was going to be approximately 8LB at my EDD.  I ended up being 2 weeks overdue and he was 8.5 Lbs at birth.  I also measured correctly ( weekwise) throughout that pg.

With this baby they are predicting her to be around 7.5LB - 8 Lbs so it will be interesting to see how accurate that is.

  • My ob sent me for a sizing u/s to measure the baby. It took place 3 weeks before EDD and they estimated 7lbs at that time. She was born 8lbs 12 oz.
  • belly measurements, examing your belly (like pushing it) and US.  I was given 2 late term US because he was late.  They were accurate within 1/2 pound.
  • For me the doc estimated by measuring my belly, pushing on it, feeling the baby etc.

My doctor and all the delivery nurses estimated/predicted him to be around 8 lbs. He was 5 lbs 6 oz. So they were WAY off. Funny thing is, I didn't think my belly was that big. And they were warning me that I might need a C-section because if he was 8 lbs they didnt think he would decend past my pelvis. Good thing he was little!

  • I had multiple late pg u/s so that is how they knew the approximate size of my LO.  It was very accurate for me, within a few ounces

  • DD's size was predicted using u/s measurements. it was pretty bang on - they said around 7 pounds, and she was exactly 7 lbs on the nose.
