What causes water to break?

My OB!!! LOL.  I had an internal on a Monday afternoon and it hurt worse then any internal she had done before so part of me thinks she stripped my membranes.  My water broke 13 hours later.

Anyway, I believe your membranes weaken over the course of 40 weeks and eventually give way.

mine was broken by the ob both times... but I was induced both times (for medical reasons)

Mine broke at 10cm, about 3 minutes before DD came out.  I could feel it bulging during contractions near the end, while we were waiting for the nurse to come check me, but I kept telling myself there's no way that could be b/c I didn't think I was that close to delivering!
