safe to lose weight while pg?

I need/want to lose about 15-20lbs... Would it be bad if I was losing weight while pg? Not that I would extreme diet, but if I start eating better and exercising more and weight just happens to come off (or not gain?) while pg...?

Does this make sense?

Re: safe to lose weight while pg?

  • I would say any healthy eating and exercise (within limits) would be safe to do while being pregnant. Are you?
  • No, I'm not pg now. I'm getting my IUD out in a couple weeks but I would like to start being healthier now and losing weight. I don't want worry about losing weight when pg... even though I lost about 5-10lbs when I got pg with Jake in the beginning and he turned out fine. LOL

  • Talk to your doctor obviously, but he/she will probably caution you about dieting while pregnant. If you were 100 pounds overweight it would be different, but to lose 15-20 would probably require you to limit calories in a way that most likely wouldn't be good for the baby.
  • I dropped 13ish lbs a few months ago by cutting out soda and sweets/snacks...so it's not that I would limit the calories, I would just eat the "better for you" ones.

  • As long as you're listening to your body and making sure to get the nutrients and number of calories you need, losing a little weight while pg is not necessarily bad.  Many women who are on diets for gestational diabetes lose weight or gain very little total.  I lost weight in my first trimester this time despite having no morning sickness and my doc was fine with it since I wasn't underweight to begin with.
