Pennsylvania Babies

Diapers

Sorry to PW today.

My mom said she would like to start buying diapers for us when she grocery shops every week.  I have no idea what kind to tell her to get.  How many stage 1/newborn size should I get?  What brand do you use?  We are using disposable diapers.  I heard brand name is better for smaller babies but store brand like Target is fine for older babies and will fit just as well.  Any advice is appreciated.

One more question.  We were given some scented wipes at our shower yesterday.  Is it better to not use those?  Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: Diapers

  • In the beginning we used Pampers Swaddlers and Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive NB size.  We went through about 230 of them before he grew out of them.  It's probably strange that I know the # but we only used a certain # of boxes before we switched.

We used unscented but even those were too much for E's skin.  We switched to baby wash cloths so I'm no help there.

ETA:  wow, I can't believe you're 32 weeks already!  Time flies!  Hope you're well!

  • We use Pampers, started with swaddlers and switched to babydry when he outgrew the swaddlers.  I think I used about 150 NB size (1 month), then he was in size 1 for 2 months, size 2 for a month, then 2/3s until he was 6 months, he stayed in size threes for 6 months.  Connor was 8lb 4oz at birth.  HTH!

I would also suggest the sensitive diapers for the first few weeks, they were such a help in keeping track of the wet diapers.

As far as wipes go, I used the Pampers sensitive wipes for a while and then switched over to the babydry ones.  I stocked up last summer when they were on sale - we havent had any problem with the wipes but when I have a newborn I plan on using the sensitive again for a while.

  • I can't believe it either Christina.  We're so ready to meet our little one!

  • We had a quick grower, so we breezed through newborns (get a pack but save the receipt, some kids are born already too big for them). Adam went through two small packs of NB, one big BJ's box of size 1s and we didn't even buy too many BJs boxes of 2s or 3s. Other kids get stuck on 3s forever but we've been in 4s forever.

Maybe you could tell her to focus on the bigger sizes, like threes, fours and fives. That way you know you'll use them all. Also, in the very beginning, you have so many things that are given to you - clothes, toys, equipment, etc. But when you hit 6 months or so, you're buying your own clothes, toys, diapers, formula and everything else. So it would be a great relief to take diapers out of that budget and just raid the stash in the basement, KWIM?

  • Oh, and brand. We are Pampers people. Swaddlers and then Baby Dry. We liked Cruisers too, but we liked Baby Dry just as much and you get more in a pack for the same price.

And you can probably hold on to the scented wipes and use them down the road. We used Pampers sensitive wipes in the beginning and switched to Huggies Natural-something when the poop got more adult and I wanted something more substantial between my hand and poop then Pampers sensitive offered. The Huggies are thicker. But someone got us a Costo-sized pack of scented wipes and we used them starting around 5 months and they worked fine.

    100% agreed !

  • We used the Pamper's Swaddlers, and depending on the hospital you go to, I believe that is what most of them use as well. ?We were able to take home almost 2 bags full of diapers newborn just from the hospital. ?Eli was small so he used the newborn size for maybe 2 months? ?We eventually switched to Nature Babycare which is kind of like 7th generation, they are eco friendly and we get them from diapers.com. ?They are disposable, yet good for the enviro! ?If thats not as much of an issue for you, I'd stick to Pampers, thats usually what i will get when we run out. ?Newborns go through so many diapers! ?Just when you think they were done pooping and you change them, 5 minutes later they go again! ?Especially in the middle of the nigth when you want to go back to bed, haha. ?

    That's a really great idea!!

Another vote for Pamper's Swaddlers for a newborn. I like some other brands, too, but the pampers are easy to get everywhere and do the best job in the newborn sizes by a mile for us! We're doing a combo of cloth and disposables right now, so I'm not a ton of help on numbers, but just to give you an idea of how much it can vary with how long they're in different sizes, Nicholas is just over 3 weeks and our pack of swaddlers in newborn size is almost empty and I think we're going to get the size 1 next at some point this week. He's not tiny, but not huge(he was 7#12oz at birth, got down to 7#7oz and was up to 8#11oz at his 2 week appt last Tuesday, so I'm guessing he's over 9 now). But, he's growing quickly and the newborn still do a good job, they're just getting tight to get around to close the tabs. So that size lasted about 3-4 weeks for us. We generally go through about 8-12 diapers a day, (depending on how often he pees while we're changing him;) and I think that's fairly typical of a newborn, so you can always use that as a loose idea on how many you'll need and for how long.

  • I'll be no help for numbers, but my plan is to buy a few NB and size 1's in pampers swaddlers sensitive.  The sensitive diapers have a yellow wetness indicator line.  I found out with my niece that in the beginning, it can be hard to tell whether or not it's actually wet without practically sticking your hand it in :D

For size 2 and up, I am using BJs brand diapers.  My SIL used them the entire time for my other nieces, and never had any issues with them leaking or being unreliable.

I also stocked up on 2 cases of swaddlers sensitive wipes, and then I will be moving to BJs wipes as well.

  • We got alot of disposable from the shower that we used when were were out and about here is what I found out.

Pampers are great but kinda expensive

Huggies had alot of leaks and blow outs

Luvs were great and not as expensive as pampers

Giant brand had no stretch I felt like I was wrapping him in paper but they didn't ever leak

  • Also if you have unopend pack of a size that your LO out grew most places let you exchange for the bigger size
  • This has nothing to do with diapers, though I had good luck with Swaddlers when I was caring for my niece just after birth. They seemed to fit her skinny legs really well. She went through about 8 during the day. Oh and she did have an allergic reaction to the scented wipes. We ended up keeping those in the car for ourselves and quick cleanups!

I actually just wanted to say hi. I am a Messiah alum as well, and actually know a few of your husband's friends (Tim, Jared, the other Tim, Jason, etc...). Always interesting to see some familiar faces! DH and I live in Harrisburg and have been married since August '07. We are currently proud cat parents as well. Loved the pics on your bio! :) Okay good luck with the diapers!
