XP- Toxic Crib Mattress?

I was planning on purchasing the Simmoms Health Assure crib mattress from Sears as I thought it was considered 'safe', however, after doing a little research, I have found that it contains polyurethane foam which can be dangerous. Now I am not sure what to do. Is anyone else concerned about 'toxic' a mattresses? What did you decide to do?

Thanks!

Re: XP- Toxic Crib Mattress?

  • My husband and I really thought about this issue for a long time.  We want to be EF and budget-concious (you could call us cheap).  Ultimately, we decided to buy an organic mattress (the NaturePedic No Compromise one).  It was our biggest baby expenditure by far ($279).  We know what we can't protect our little girl from everything that's toxic, but decided that the place where she will be sleeping for 2-3 years (our crib converts to a toddler bed) should be as safe as possible.  I get nervous about big purchases and don't regret this one at all.

  • We were given a mattress with the crib a friend gave us, which is supposed to be worse about giving off gasses than a new one.  I'm planning on wrapping it, so nothing should be getting anywhere near the baby.  Babesafe makes the cover and you can order it online.
  • We bought from organicgrace.com which was definitely our biggest splurge for the nursery (I think it was $260 w/ free shipping).  And just a plug for their amazing customer service.  If you decide to go the totally organic route, I highly rec them.
