We have one and it's just full of sand (no water). DS likes to fling it all over the back deck. We had a BBQ a couple of weeks ago and all the kids were playing with it. They loved it! We don't get a chance to get out back often but I'm glad we bought it.
ETA: DS's has a water side but it got to be too messy so we opted to just fill it with sand.
I'd keep it all sand or all water. We tried to combine the two and we ended up with a lot of mud. Addie would mix the water into the sand and then make a big fat mess. That being said, she loves it as a water table.
I like the activity table over the box just because I'd rather him not sit in the sand! He makes a big enough mess just with the table! i can't imagine how much more sand he'd drag into the house with it being all in his shorts and stuff!
We have that exact one and I absolutely love it. My kids (DS 3 and DD 18 mo.) can easily spend an hour or more playing with it. It's a good size so a few kids at a time can play and no one gets in eachother's way. It can get messy w/ the water and the sand, but so what? Isn't that what playing outside is all about? Wipe them down when they are done and go about your day.

We have a sandbox and a water table. She likes both. I'd keep them separate, though, or its a big mess.
I don't mind her sitting in the sand, but she comes in through the patio door onto a hard floor, so its really easy to clean up.
