Where will baby sleep?

Our plan is to keep the pack-n-play in the living room for her to sleep in during the day (at least at first) and have her in her crib in her nursery at night.  We have nothing set up for her in our bedroom.  Last night at our baby boot camp class we were told that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends having the baby sleep in your bedroom for the first 3 months and this reduces the chance of SIDS.

Now I don't know what to do.  What are your plans?  Moms - what did you do?  TIA!

Re: Where will baby sleep?

  • We used a pack n play during the day for her to sleep in. We tried having her in our room to sleep at night, but she was restless and didn't sleep well (as well as a newborn can).  We moved her crib back to her nursery when she was 3 days old and she slept a lot better.

  • I have her in the pack in play in the living room and for now she is in the bassinet in our bedroom  at night.  I was actually planning on moving her to her crib this weekend.  I'll re-think that though now as I am terrified of SIDS.  We originally put her in our room since it would be easier when I was breast feeding but since I'm not doing that now it really doesn't make much sense for her to be with us since her room is 2 doors away and that's where I end up taking her to feed her anyway.  But, my sister always put her kids into the  cribs right away and swears they slept better in there than anywhere else.  So, I guess my answer is........I don't know eihter!

  • She slept in a bassinet right beside my side of the bed for the first 4 months.  We were able to borrow a bassinet from DH's cousin.  It was hard for me to move her to the nursery at 4 months, but she was getting too big for the bassinet.  I've also heard of people using the PNP in their bedroom for baby to sleep in those first few months.  Also, if you're planning to BF, you'll want her right by your bed to make those night time feedings much easier!
  • We had the PNP in the living room too. We wanted him to sleep in his own room from the first night, but he was such a noisy sleeper that it sounded like we had a dragon in the next room the way he sounded over the monitor. And we were both so paranoid that we just took turns sleeping on the couch - one of us would take the first half of the night and the other would take the other half. Also helped that we could watch TV while we fed him or tried to get him back to sleep. That was nice because we each got at least a half a night's sleep. After about two weeks, we transitioned him back into his crib, although I had to buy softer bedding - he had gotten used to the soft cushy PNP sheet and refused to sleep on a cold crib sheet. We never considered having him in our room. No space, plus we didn't want to have to deal with moving him in a few months.
  • We had a pack n play downstairs for daytime naps. I also bought a graco travel-lite crib ( a mini-pack n play) for our bedroom, which is what DD slept in for the first 6 weeks.  After 6 weeks, we moved her to her crib in the room across the hallway.  I did this mainly because DD is a loud sleeper, and I am such a light sleeper, that I could not get any sleep.  Now I hear her when she cries, but not for every little noise she makes during the night.  We now take the travel-lite crib on trips for naps, so it was more useful than buying a bassinet.
  • We plan to try the crib in the nursery at night from Day 1, but we'll be flexible to do whatever works best for us.  There will be room in our bedroom for the pack-n-play, if needed, but I'd rather try the nursery from the start, even if it means more up-and-down for me at night to BF.

I've just heard nightmare stories about parents with best intentions to move the baby from their room to the nursery within a few months, but who get trapped into situations where the kids end up not being able to sleep anywhere but in the parents' room.  A coworker of mine still has his daughter in their room, and she's nearly two.

Then again, if we're advised to do something different at our childcare classes, obviously we'd consider an alternate plan.

  • We have the PNP in our room, so that's where he sleeps at night. He grunts like crazy, though, so I'd love to move him soon, but it's just so much more convenient to have him close for those nighttime feedings, so he'll stay with us for at least a few months. Plus, Amelia is still in the crib, so we need to get her transitioned and settled before we move him in there anyway. so, yes - he's in our room, but mostly out of necessity and convenience right now more than anything! Definitely do what you're comfortable with and what feels right for you guys:)
  • We had Eli in the bassinet in our room until he was around 3-4 months. ?He was quite the spit upper so it was easier to clean him and listen for it in our room. ?We used the crib or pack n play during the day. ?A lot of pack n plays have that bassinet attachment so you could just put the bassinet in your room if you felt like that was where you wanted to go! ?I know lots of people who put the baby in their crib in the nursery the night they get home. ?I think that monitors are so great that its just like they are in the room anyway.
  • Jackson slept in a bassinet in our room for the first 2 months. After that we moved him to the nursery to sleep in his crib. We are all sleeping much better since he moved to his crib.

  • Ali still sleeps in teh PNP in the living room during the day (she is right now!)

We tried having her in the basinette in our room, but between her being so noisy with grunting and moving and us snoring, no one slept too well.  DH and I also did the sleep on the couch for half the night while DD was in the PNP until she was about a month old, then we put her in the crib in her room right next door and we all slept better.

I know the AAP has babies best interest in mind, but some of their recommendations don't always make sense or seem based in reality to me.  I keep in mind that they are recommendations, and if they don't work for us, they don't work for us.

Remember there are many other precautions you can take to avoid SIDS - not smoking or having the baby near smoke, having a fan in the babies room, back to sleep, using a pacifer, making sure the baby doesn't get to hot, no loose blankets, etc. Having the baby sleep in your room until 3 months is just one of them.

  • He will be in the PNP in our room. Daytime naps downstairs really aren't an option, he will be in either his crib or the pnp in our rooms.  Our dogs sound like elephants running through the house, and they bark more when they are downstairs for some reason.  Wierdo dogs!

  • We have E in a bassinet in our room.  I'll be sad when he outgrows it b/c it's so easy for night time feedings and I love having him close by.  He used to be SUPER noisy at night but not so much anymore (watch now that I said that he'll be a grunting machine again).

I recently heard a pedi at Hershey suggesting to have the child where you want them to sleep long term by 4 months.  E will be in his crib before then.

  • Natalie was in her crib from day 1.  Our apartment, you walk through her room to get to ours which is right on the other side of the wall so there was no room to have a pnp or bassinet in our room and being right next door, that was really our only option.  We used one of the sleep positioners so she couldn't roll etc and she did great!  Plus there was no problem later on getting her to sleep in her bed, plus she slept through the night from day 1 which for me was GREAT!
