Baby Names

Students shoot down #1 boy name

Today, my students (high school special education) shot down my number 1 boy name choice---George.  They say it is "an old man's name".  LOL

I wish my BIL/SIL felt the same.  After they heard that we had chosen it, they decided that they think it would be a good middle name for the baby they are expecting.  Sad  What can I do about that?  I'm not pregnant right not, as far as I know.

IMO no, that is not normal at all.

  • I didn't talk about it as a baby name. That would be unprofessional.

They talk about names that they like/dislike all of the time.  Several of them have very young sibs or are uncles/aunts to little nieces/nephews.  They also just finished one of those "baby" science/health projects where they had to name an egg and carry it around for two days.

They have DEFINITE opinions on names.

  • I don't think you can "claim" a name.

Especially if you aren't even pg...

  • My students ask me about my pregnancy all the time.  They wanted to know the sex, then the name...  Sharing things with your students is part of developing a rapport.  However, I would think it was a little weird to discuss if the teacher wasn't pregnant.

I remember my Algebra 2 teacher was pregnant when I was in her class. We always asked her about her pregnancy. She would give us updates. I remember she named her daughter Emma and this was years before it was popular. She was a cute petite woman who I adored. Needless to say I don't think it's weird to discuss it.?

  • I honestly think George is an old fashioned name but if you like it...

Don't you hate it when people get nasty and you feel like you have defend your question - when in reality you just didn't want to preface the question with a big ol' explanation.

  • Echo that!! My brother and his wife, who are not pregnant or even trying, "claimed" Claire as the name they want for their first daughter (if and when they even have one!!).... which of course was the name we chose for one of our twin girls.  He put up such a fuss that we gave it up and made it Madeleine's middle name.   Still, seriously people - don't "claim" names.  It's not the front seat.  And we're not 5. Let it go.
