3rd Trimester

Do you feel you do more prep work for baby

than your H?

I find that my H lets me look into things like childbirth classes, pediatrician interviews & questions, baby care books, registering, baby items and so on.  I suppose it's because he's clueless about babies and really doesn't know where to begin.  He figures that I know what I'm doing so I think he just looks to me rather than taking intiative.  But sometimes I wish he'd research things on his own.

Am I the only one?

  • I'm definitely the researcher in the family and then I relay pertinent info to DH....so I know what you mean!

  • I assign him things that I'm not interested in, like cord blood banking, insurance, basically anything that involves money. I do all of the room decor and we both registered together. We have a common goal of not overloading on stuff. But I do a lot more detailed research, like what's safe and what brands are good and all that than he does.

  • Absolutely.?

?In his defense, though, once I pick up the ball and make a list of what needs to be done, he will run with it if I'm having trouble getting everything accomplished. Major case in point: I'm terrified of not finding the right childcare situation...and so I've procrastinated. He's picked up the reins on that one (thankfully) and has taken over some other tasks that he knows will help when I'm tied up with other things or not feeling well (he's doing a lot of the shopping and cooking lately, which is a huuuuge help.) So while I've absolutely done the lion's share of the baby prep, he's definitely pitched in where he can so it's definitely a team effort.

  • Yeah, I totally do all of the research...  It was the same when we were getting married, buying our home, etc.  In fact, I do all the leg-work on just about everything - buying gifts for his family, picking out car insurance, stuff like that.  But he was working full-time and going to school full-time almost the entire time we've known each other until last year, and now he works a full-time job and does freelance writing on the side (which takes a lot of his time), plus he's good at helping around the house, so I don't mind doing that stuff.  We both do the things that fit with our personalities I think.

Same here. DH and I naturally divide up research/prep work. Since "baby" falls under "medical" (one of my areas), I have taken the primary role. I don't mind. I enjoy it, and he is good about providing input when I ask.

Plus, he's been busy with other baby prep-work, like replumbing the house, waterproofing the basement walls, and researching a "family car." I feel like we're both preparing for baby, but we just got different lists. ;)

Ah ha!  Same here, actually.  He researched our family car and has been working on the house non-stops since I got pg.  And he's been working OT since December to pay off some bills.  So again, we're each doing work that fits our personalities and capabilities.

  • Oh yeah... I've handled all of that stuff. DH helped make calls to local childcare centers and helped pick out the stroller. but that is about it.

  • Absolutely!  He always wants to know what I've found out, but he doesn't want to take the time to look into things.

  • Yup, only when I relay the information he doesn't believe me until he hears it from A) the midwife, B) the childbirth class teach, or C) his mother.
