Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Constipated baby: ratio for diluted prune juice?

We want to give Sadie a little prune juice every day to help her bowels. She pushes so hard to poo that she throws up. We've tried olive oil in her food, eating veggies fruits and fiberous foods and staying away from things like bananas and rice but she's still having difficulties.

She's 8.5 months old and weighs right under 18 pounds. Today we gave her 1 oz prune juice diluted with 3 ounces of water but that was just a guess. I wanted to see if any of you have any experience/advice.

Re: Constipated baby: ratio for diluted prune juice?

  • i do 1-1.5 oz juice with 1-1.5 oz water. equal parts. our doc said it didn't have to be diluted, but i like to so he can drink more. it's good if we're on the go and i can't bf him right away. i give him his prune juice!

  • We gave our son prune juice on a daily basis for a while to help things get going.  Once daily 1.5 prune juice and 1.5 water.

  • have you tried peaches? We were giving DD prunes and our pedi said to give her peaches. He said when she was crying 'cause she was constipated & couldn't have a bm to give her peaches for every meal for 24 hours. otherwise, to incorporate a serving of peaches daily. Since we started doing that, no pooping problems.

  • I use apple juice and do equal parts. We're also starting to give juice daily to keep things moving.
  • you could also do prunes in baby food form since she is 8.5 months.
  • DD has gotten prune juice daily for many months - she wouldn't drink it straight so we mixed it in with one of her bottles! We do 2 oz formula, 3 oz whole milk, and 1 oz prune juice - all mixed together! Looks like chocolate milk, hehe :)
  • Thanks for the advice ladies. We give her prunes in her baby food and she occasionally easts peaches but not every day. Maybe we'll do a combo of the prune juice with breakfast or lunch of peache for a couple of days and see how it goes. I don't want to over do it but I want her to have some relief, poor thing.
  • We give our DD Karo syrup in her bottle when she has trouble and it helps a lot.
