XP: Moms - Cereal Question

DS has been eating cereal for about a month now.  He's had both rice and oatmeal and seems to really like them both.  The pedi said we would talk about starting fruits & veggies at his 6 month appt. which is in two weeks.  I'm wondering if it would be okay to go ahead and give him some cereal with fruit mixed in now.  I think he'd really like it, but I have a little hesitation because I've heard that you should always start veggies before fruits since fruits are so sweet.  Any advice would be great!

Re: XP: Moms - Cereal Question

  • Is your DS FF or BF?  Not that it's a huge difference, but one theory is that BF babies do better starting on fruits.  We started DD on applesauce, then moved on to bananas and pears before moving to a veggie.

  • I think it is a personal decision about when to start. I personally dont think starting 2 weeks early is going to affect anything. We started solids at 4 months because the pedi said we could start at any time. We started with sweet potates and DS loved it! Then we went to applesauce, then carrots, peas, green beans, and then more fruits. We did 3 days of each before switching to something else just to make sure he didnt have any allergies or reactions to what we were giving him. We didnt mix it with the cereal, we did cereal at breakfast time and a fruit/veggie at dinner time. Then when he got up to 3 meals a day we did cereal in the AM, fruit at lunch and veggie at dinner. It is all about what works for you. Good luck if you start!!
  • fruits. veggies. doesn't matter. but keep it simple. just introduce a tiny bit at first and stick with the same flavor for a few days -- to rule out any allergies.

Mostly BF until the last month or two when I couldn't keep up with how much he was eating!  I now just BF morning and night and he gets formula the rest of the time.

  • we started cereal a little after 4 months and I started adding fruits and veggies about 5 months. I did both. First was avacado, then pears, then sweet potatoes (loved them), then bananas, apples, etc. In the morning the girls get a fruit mixed with their oatmeal, then in the evening they get a veggie.
  • DD is bf and we stared cereal just after 4 months...about 5 mos we started veggies and are still with that.  She is 5 1/2 mos and has cereal for breakfast and we do a veggie for dinner.  So far she's had peas, green beans and squash and has done well with them all.  I've never mixed cereal with anything but water or bm.

GL!  It's soooo much fun watching DD eat from a spoon...soooo cute:)
