PP weight loss (weight post but not really)

so filling out life insurance forms made me think about this (petty, yes, I know).  I was probably 20 pounds heavier than I wanted to be when I got pg last year and want to get back to that weight at whatever point in the future.  When they talk about post partum weight loss and how you should not lose too much are they generally referring to the weight you were when you got pg or a healthy weight for you in general?  For me, I think those two numbers are different.  Obviously I don't want to do anything that will compromise my health or milk supply, since I plan on bf.

  • From what I've read, you're not supposed to 'diet' for the first 4 - 6 weeks because that could affect your milk coming in. After that. you can watch what you eat, but if you're breast feeding you should be careful not to restrict your calories too much (add about 500 calories on top of what your calorie budget would be otherwise).

  • I think this is something that confuses alot of women.  When I talked to my doc about it she said that ESPECIALLY if you breastfeed, you will see weight loss and as long as you are getting the recommened 2000-2200 calories a day while feeding then gradual, safe weight loss is a good thing.

I think as long as you are being smart and safe with your weight loss you should be fine.  I was about 30 pounds overweight when I became pregnanct and plan on losing as much as I can on a good plan.  WW has a plan for breastfeeding mom's that I want to try. (mostly it's just extra water)

  • You can shed additional weight while BFing, you're just not supposed to crash diet and lose it superfast.
  • I was told in my bf class that we're not supposed to "diet" for at least 2 months.  I'm sure that eating healthy and exercising when your dr. clears you is fine.  While you're breast feeding you should still be getting an extra 300-500 calories per day.   I was happy with my weight before and would love to get back to that but I'm guessing I'll carry an extra 5-10 lbs while I breastfeed, even though they say it helps you lose weight.
