Diaper Question

The biggest piece of advice we've been receiving lately has been to start buying diapers now...  we're 11w4d... is this a good idea?

I normally go shopping about every 3 weeks or so, so we wouldn't have TOO many, but we would have quite a lot of diapers by the fall when the babies come...

What if we buy all these diapers and they end up not working for the babies?  What if they don't work for our kids?  This has been my major hold up on just following the advice....  Your thoughts?

Re: Diaper Question

  • We started buying diapers much later! I think I was in the 30w zone... I bought four boxes of Pampers Swaddlers NB, and a couple boxes of Swaddlers 1. You don't really need to start buying them now ;-P

  • I have a lot now, and now I'm wondering if I bought too many.  for example I have like 600 size 1 diapers.  It sounds like so many!  I would wait until later to buy, because you can exchange them at BRU & Target with a receipt, but it has to be from a purchase made in the last 90 days.

I really did not receive any diapers as shower gifts, but I bought a lot and then had my sister-in-law give me her left over diapers from her 4 month old, as she is growing out of sizes.

  • I wouldn't buy them yet since you have no idea what size they will be when they come, and you are right in saying that you have no idea what type will work best for your babies. You can get a gc to where ever you think you will buy diapers the most and put money on there instead. Or just make an envelope for that and put $20 in it everytime you go shopping..
  • I don't understand buying them now unless you find some amazing once in a lifetime deal.  You will want to have some in the house before you bring the kids home, but you'll have months to do that.  Also, we thankfully received a lot of diapers as gifts.  After the gifts, I literally bought zero size 1 diapers (we did have to buy newborn, size 2, etc), but you may want to wait to see what you receive as gifts before you buy too many.

  • i agree- i never understand why people stock up.... unless you find a great deal on clearance (which doesn't happen often- usually when they change packaging, etc) - there is no reason to let a store hold on to your money all that time- while you have diapers collecting dust in your house.

You will need to buy diapers- no matter how much you stock up. It's not like you'll never get to leave the house again to get them.

Also- you never know what size your babies will need- or what brand will work best for them. some babies leak in certain brands.

my DS was 7lb 4oz - and only in NB size for a week.... granted, with twins it's likely they will be in newborn longer- but you just never know... nor how long they will be in size 1, etc.

wait until after your shower - and then stock up on a few packs of NB size and a few 1's... you can buy what you need later (or ask someone to pick them up for you if getting out is too hard).

I only stocked up on some 1s i got on clearance before my DS was born- and it worked out just fine.

  • We had some diapers but went REALLY quickly from Preemies, to Newborns, to size 1 and now size 2, that we had SO MANY leftover.  We also don't use disposibles very often, but we had many packages to pass along to friends.  I'd wait a little longer - save coupons now and if you REALLY want to stock up, make sure to get a large variety of sizes :)
  • My advice would be to buy a gift card for the amount of diapers.  A gift card is much easier to store, and you're not stuck with 1 brand.  GL.
