Those with babies on neocate

Hello! My babies might be put on this and I was wondering how do you pay for it??? Did you get your insurance to cover it?(I don't think mine will) Find an online source?? Pay out of pocket?? We checked with the pharmacy and it is $50 a can here...ouch! I am breastfeeding and have taken milk and soy out of my diet and today starts the elimination of eggs as well. The GI dr doesn't want me to eliminate any further and start them on neocate, but my pedi suggests elimination and if it does not work then to take the babies to see an allergist. My DH and I are still trying to decide the best option for our family but I know that if we have to spend 50 a can things will get tight.

Thanks!

Jen

  • Abby is on Elecare which is equivelant to Neocate.  Luckily, our insurance covers it 90% (and we have to pay a $100/year deductible).  We have Cigna.  I know the provider for cigna.  If you have cigna, page me and I will get the info for you.
  • Hi! JD has been on Neocate for a few months now and it has made quite a difference. He's like a whole different kid... so much happier now!

None of the pharmacies in my area carry it so I order it online (www.orderneocate.com) and it's about $35 a can. I am usually able to find coupon codes (just google Neocate promo code) that make it even less. I've called my insurance company and they won't cover it but I think I might call again.....

  • Check with your state's Health Insurance Commission.  They are the ones who monitor / regulate how insurance companies and hospitals charge for things and they can tell you.  In many states, and Maryland is one of them, there is a new law that says formulas prescribed by a doctor MUST be covered by your insurance, especially if there is a feeding issue like feeding tubes involved.  Your doctor should know if this is the law in your state.
  • We had to bite the bullet and just pay for it. For some reason, our insurance would cover Neocate if he was being fed via g-tube, but not if he drank it from a bottle. My son that was on it is now transitioned to whole milk so I am selling my extra cases currently on Ebay if you're interested. They sell there for about half of what we paid at the home medical supply store we purchased them from. Neocate was insanely expensive but was a lifesaver for us.

  • I would check with your insurance company.  Mine, unfortunately did not cover it, but it seems that most do.
  • Hi

I'm a lurker and just noticed this post.  I post on the SN board a lot and DD is on Neocate.  We have Medicaid for DD so they cover the cost.  Our insurance wouldn't cover it.  I've also been able to get samples from the GI doctor that we see.  Maybe your doc has some too.

IMO if the GI doctor wants to put the kids on it, I would bite the bullet.  It's made a huge difference for a lot of people and DD gained weight well without eating that much more of this formula.  Almost every part of the formula gets absorbed into their system.  It's made a great differece for us, but certainly understand the cost issues.  Good luck!

  • One of my Girls' was on It and may have to go back on It....Our Children's hospital did alot of research on it and found that I can apply for a drug card that would cover It..I am however In Canada.....I would try and ask the GI specialist and or a hospital admin/social worker and see if there are any programs out there! It is $200 a case here for 4 cans and the cans are small and would not last very long! And she hated the formula!! She gagged and spit up even more!! I have her back on Alimentum for now and praying the GI specialist doesn't want to put her back on It!!
  • Unfortunately my insurance won't cover it. Thanks for the website! That will save us $61 then I found a promo code for $30 off that. I really appreciate it!!
