DH and I are not having a shower BEFORE we have our child, and by the time we come home with baby and get through the relinquishment/revocation period we will have already acquired a lot of gender neutral 'newborn essentials'.

We still plan to have a 'welcome baby home / birth-day party' but on the registry we would put clothing and essentials for later months of life.

The problem I found was that there was no one (or even two or three) stores that had everything we liked. 

www.myregistry.com I found is an excellent way for adoptive parents (well any parents really) to register (thus featured in adoptive families magazine). You can create a registry link for friends/family but you can put stuff on your registry from LOTS of places. AND you can also create a cash fund (give it a name, like Baby Fund or what ever) and friends/family can contribute to your cash fund. The cash is then sent to your paypal account.

We use www.alternativegiftregistry.org for similar reasons. It's more manual but we added things like "making dinner", "night of babysitting", etc.

Amazon also allows you to add things from other sites to your wish list so if there are things that they don't carry people can still know about them.  I know I have a running list (mostly for myself) so I can find all those things that I think I need.

I have friends that used alternative gift registry, and it worked wonderfully for them.  It was such a good idea to share this information!
