We have been spoon feeding our girls rice cereal...they don't take much, but I guess it's a start. Erin's so cute...she sees the spoon and opens her mouth really big.
At 5-6 months, how much cereal were you/are you feeding? Do you put some in a cereal feeder/bottle? I can't find any of those...what do you use?
Thanks for answering all my questions!
Re: cereal question
My trio shared about a Tbsp when we first started at 5 months. By the time we graduated to bananas at 6 months, they might have shared 2 Tbsp. To give you another idea of how much they would eat, when they did start bananas they would share 1/2 of a med-lg banana, pureed in the Magic Bullet.
I never fed them cereal from a bottle b/c my pedi discouraged it and it made sense as to why: you want them to get the practice of spoon feeding and having solids, they don't really need solids for nutrition, so feeding them solids from a bottle would actually be keeping them from advancing.
However, it's my understanding that Dr. Brown's makes a Y cut cereal nipple, if you really want to do it that way.
HTH!
at that point when they were 5 months, we did 2 feedings: (1) at 9am 2 tbsp oatmeal + 1.5oz formula + 1oz fruit and (2) at 2ishpm: 1tbsp rice cereal + 1oz formula + 2oz veggie
we switched to 3 feedings at 6 months, they get yogurt for the 3rd one at 5pm. the rest pretty much stayed the same, the quantities increased a bit though?
Not sure if this helps -- it's on my printout from the pedi.
- Start with plain rice cereal with iron. Mix cereal with formula, breast milk, or water -- USE A SPOON. (Note from me, they said the point was to get them used to eating not from a bottle, so I vote no on the cereal feeder/bottle).
- Start once a day. Let your baby determine the amount. Please stop when your baby turns away or "zips the lips" together.
Not related to your question but I'll finish what my sheet says just in case someone needs it:
- Leave 3-5 days in between the introduction of new, single ingredient, pureed fruits and vegetables. If your baby is intolerant to a certain food you may notice an increase in fussiness, gas, rash, spitting or diarrhea. Allergies are rare.
- MEATS and finger foods are usually introduced between 7-9 months.
Also -- they said the "p" veggies (peas, peaches, pears, prunes) help with poo but the other veggies tend to have the opposite effect (carrots, squash, sweet potatoes.) If the rice cereal is causing some consitpation with your baby then start with the "p" veggies to help losen things up.
I hope this helps!
