Infant motrin

Hoping that some of you mothers may be able to help me out.

I ended up taking Kendall to the pediatrician Thursday because she ended up running a 102.6 fever.  Turns out she had a double ear infection and a bad cold.  Anyway - they put her on an antibiotic and told me to giver her 1.5 dropper of motrin.  When I got home, I opened the motrin and noticed that 1.5 droppers of motrin would be over 3.125ML of motrin - which I thought was a little much.  So, I called the office and spoke to a nurse and she reaffiremd that it was 1.5 droppers of motrin.

Well, I gave this to her for 3 days and it never broke her fever.  I went back Saturday and they prescribed a different antibiotic and I spoke to a different doctor about the motrin dosage.  He said the same thing - 1.5 droppers.  I have a handout for Motrin and tylenol and it says for motrin she should get 1.875ML - which would be 1 dropper (she is 18 lbs).  I have looked everywhere on line - even showed the doc the handout and he said it was outdated (it was from 2008).

I dont understand why they would be giving her the dosage for a 18-23lb baby AND the dosage for a 12-17lb baby.  i just want to see if others agree with me that this is too much.  I ended up just changing the motrin to 1.875 (just because I think they are wrong) but wanted to see what your peds recommendations for motrin dosage is for your little ones.

Thanks for any input.

Re: Infant motrin

  • I would give her the lesser of the two doses (just to be on the safe side). I would follow the manufacturer's indication on the box since they are the ones that make the product and dose it appropriately for her age and weight. Hope she feels beter soon!!

  • My pediatrician's guide says an 18 pound child should get 1.87ML.  Good luck!
  • Could she have meant 1....half dropper of motrin? I now give Mikey 2 droppers of Motrin, when we absolutely need it but he's also around 28lbs.

The best thing for a fever that won't drop is to alternate motrin and tylenol. Give her motrin and then 4 hours later tylenol, 4 hours later motrin, etc. Keep doing that until the fever breaks.

  • Thank you all.  I definitely was told 1.5 droppers - by at least 3 different people.  I just called and spoke to a different nurse at the practice and she confirmed what I thought - the information I was given before was wrong.  It is 1.875ML for an 18lb baby.  I don't know if the syringe was changed recently (since it has .625, 1.25, and 1.875 markings and the 1.5 droppers would be the middle & low indicator) but she was going to speak to others in the office to let them know.

Also - FSUSammy - thanks for the advice on the tylenol/motrin.  I had never heard that and will keep it in mind next time since the motrin didn't seem to break the fever (I am just assuming it broke on it's own since it took almost 4 days).  I love handy tidbits like this :)

  • Hope your little one is feeling better. And just to let you know I do the Motrin/Tylenol combo as well whenever Diego had a fever.

  • We just had a similar discussion with our doctor and it seems that they were referring to children's tylenol/motrin not infants, when using the larger dose.  The infant's is much more concentrated and therefore you should use the smaller dose.  I hope your baby feels better soon.
