2nd Trimester

registering for toddler items?

I have already been generously given a lot of hand-me-downs, gifts from the grandparents, plus I am sewing all the bedding and curtains, so I can't register for any of that. I am using cloth diapers, so I can't even register for all the normal diaper stuff. I am also kind of a minimalist, so I just don't feel like in infant needs a lot of stuff, or that I need fancy gadgets like wipe warmers.

So...I am having trouble filling out my registry. ?I am having two showers and last year I had to hear about how "poor" my bridal registry was from MIL.

Would it be weird to register for stuff for my baby when he is slightly older? One of my friends suggested it, but it seemed odd to me. ?Is anyone doing this?

Re: registering for toddler items?

  • Yes, within reason. Things like sippy cups, spoons, bowls, a booster seat are all things you need in the first two years. Probably not stuff that an older toddler would need, though.

  • I wouldn't bat an eye if I saw a friend with young toddler products on her registry.?

do you have things like swaddle and receiving blankets?

you could still register for cloth diapering supplies, I believe there is a site for it.

But I think it's ok to register for things you will need later within reason - convertable car seat, sippy cups, bowls, spoons, wipes etc.  Extra sheets etc will be useful.

yeah, I am putting swaddlers, blankets, bottles, all that stuff. ?It just seemed like when my BFF had her shower that people ignored the practical stuff. ?They either bought the cute stuff off her registry, or just picked out something themselves. ?

I thought about making a cloth registry and I may still. But I was kinda thinking I might leave the whole cloth thing hush-hush for a bit. ?I am already hearing flack about it. ?I think people will ignore the cloth registry, if I am already registered at Target and BRU.

I am not sure what my shower guests will be like, but people were really particular for my BFF's shower. ?If items were "online only" they were not purchased. ?It seems that people want to GO to the store and physically pick out the gift. ?Very different from a wedding registry, where everyone seems to just order online.?

  • you'll still need to to get sheets, mattress pad/covers, receiving blankets, cloth-diapers-as-burps cloths, swaddlers, boppy and slipcovers for it, towels, changing pad, changing covers.

What about a sling or a snugli-type carrier?

What about a bouncer or a swing? a playmat or "gym"?

Bathtub? Bath stuff? Grooming kit? a Monitor?

If you are gonna have a bassinet you'll need sheets for that too.

Even if you wanna breast feed, if you wanna pump you'll need nipples for the the bottles and breast pads and maybe breast cream. What about nursing covers?

Also, you'll wanna make a checklist to make sure the hand-me-downs you got are actually covering all your bases need-wise. Cute clothes are nice, but you'll want a bunch of dependable onesies, sleepers, socks, hats, etc.

You'll find a lot more things you didn't think of if you go through a site like BRU.

  • You could use the wipe warmer for cloth wipes, that's what we used to store the wipes with them soaked in wipes solution.

ditto this too. don't fret about filling it up with a ton of items. There are enough "basics" like in my pp to be able to say you tried and it seems many will just get you what they want to anyways.

BUT, if you register at BRU and get useless stuff from BRU as gifts, you can do easy swaps for stuff off your registry. So even if no one gets you what you need you can still get it for "free" by trading in the "cutesy" stuff.

  • I think it's appropriate to register for anything needed/desired for the first 2 years.  It's a wish list!  People who love you will NOT judge you!
  • I don't think it's weird at all. If most of the larger items are hand-me-downs, I'd definitely register for your convertible car seat (Britax or whatever) as you'll want the most safe seat available on the market and those can be pricey. Plus that provides a larger gift that some people can go in on together like they might otherwise do for a swing or stroller. I wouldn't think twice about seeing that on a friend's registry.

See, here is my problem. ?I am making the sheets and changing pad covers. ?MIL just bought us our changing pad and mattress and a mattress cover (though I registered for a second). ?I was already given a hand-me down boppy with three covers and a "my breast friend"

I have been given three different slings, a bathtub, a snap-n-go, a swing, a moses basket, and a high chair and an entire dresser full of onesies, hats, sleepers and other clothes.?

I'll keep going through the BRU site. ?I registered for co-sleeper sheets and things like that. ?We still have several large items on there such as the stroller, car seat, bouncer. ?I need to add smaller items.

    ?thanks!?

  • IMO, anything at BRU or the baby section of target (for example) is fine for your registry.

I, too, had trouble with my registry, since we have a TON of hand-me downs from my nephew.  We still registered for some things that were handed down.  The plan is to see if we really like the registered for stuff better, and, if not, return it for credit.
