Hi there,
Desperately trying to pick an OB, and in order to do that, I need to pick a hospital too.
I am a little leery about St. Johns because I have heard that there are a lot of medical students, etc. involved, since it's a teaching hospital and all. I would prefer to not have a lot of extra people in the room, and really prefer not have some perky med student catch the baby. I have heard that I don't have to worry because you can dictate who is in the room and who's not. Do any of you that have delivered at St. Johns agree with this? Any experiences to share?
Also looking for OB - I have a few good recs so far.
Dr. Bowers at SSM Womens Center in Sunset Hills.
Dr. Collins on Kennerly Rd.
Re: St. Johns?
My sister had all three of her babies at St. Johns and there was never extra people in the room. Her doctor delivered all of her babies with no medical students present. I use to see Dr. Whalen at St. Johns until my insurance swtiched. He is wonderful. He is very caring and get to know you as a patient. Good Luck finding a doctor and choosing a hospital.
I recentely delivered at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis and had a wonderful experience so if you live out that way it could be an option too.
I delivered both my daughters at St. John's and had excellent experiences both times. My first labor was really, really long and the nurse I had were so encouraging. My second labor was really, really fast. Same thing - the nurses were awesome. I never had any additional people in the room.
I was nervous at first that St. John's was just a baby mill, but honestly that's what they do. They have great resources for new mothers and if you find a doctor you love, chances are he/she will deliver there. We never felt lost in the shuffle and always got great care. Additionally they really worked with me on how I wanted to labor - I think a lot of it depends on what is acceptable to your doctor of course.
I switched OBs at 30 weeks pregnant with my first daughter. Through many recommendations I called Dr. Renee Stein's office. I've met her as she is an associate of my doctor, and she is fabulous. She is also apparently extremely popular and may or may not have openings. She did not have availablity when I called so I contacted her associate (also highly recommended) Dr. J Todd Glass. He's been my doctor every since and is awesome! I like all his associates and he is exceptional. I'm happily going through my third pregnancy with him and his office. I've highly recommended him to several friends, a few of which are now his patients and also think he's great. His offices are at Gravios and 270.
Best of luck whatever you decide.
Basically ditto what most PPs said.
I go to Dr. Kathryn Botney and have also seen Dr. Whalen (as PP said). They are, or used to be, in the same practice. Dr. Botney is great; she's been doing this for a long time and is very calm and confident, which I appreciate. Her nurse, Tanya, is also knowledgeable and personable, which is very important because you end up talking to the nurse on the phone more often than the doctor during your pregnancy.
I also delivered at St. John's. I appreciate that it's a baby factory because practice makes perfect. One thing my doc pointed out that swung my vote was that other hospitals (like MoBap, where I used to work, good hospital) only have one or two anesthesiologists in the whole house. St. John's has one there at all times just for the laboring moms. My epi was ready to go seemingly moments after my doc ordered it. That. Was. Awesome.
My post-partum care was okay. There was no lactation consultant available to me and when I asked for help breastfeeding, a baby nurse showed up with a bottle of formula. They lose 10 points for that. I've heard from other people that that wasn't a problem for them.
My baby's care post-partum was great. The nurses were very knowledgeable and kind. My labor nurses were top-notch. I allowed a medical student to come in and watch and I think she helped stitch me up, too.
Hope that helps and hope you've enjoyed my novel!
Hey my doctor is Dr. Super in the same office. When I did meet with Dr. Glass I liked him a lot too. If anything ever happened with Dr. Super I would go to Dr. Glass.
I see Dr. Glass too and love the entire office! Dr. Hugge delivered my son and Dr. Stein delivered my daughter. I really love all of the doctors in the practice.
I see Dr. Bowers and am very fond of her. She is attentive, polite, and informative. I am delivering at St. Clare's and could not be more excited. I took the open house tour and was very impressed with the friendly staff, clean atmosphere, and advanced equipment.
Regarding St. John's being a teaching hospital, my cousin did have a bad experience with that. A student tried to do her epidural and could not get the needle in the right place, causing some unwanted pain. The nurse had to take over and do it right.
I delivered my son at St. John's and had a wonderful experience. I had a c-section so I can't really comment on the extra people in the room. My son was jaundice and they were great in treating him and setting up everything to continue at home care for him for the first couple of days.
My doctor is Dr. Tobey. His office is in the Medical building attached to St. John's. We went to him when we had not successfully gotten pg after about 9 months. He went above and beyond to help us to avoid going to a fertility specialist. And it worked!! He is a very direct doctor, but also compassionate. We are expecting again and I had my first appointment last week and he stood in the room while I got my ultrasound and when we went in to talk to him, he rattled off all the stats about my son's delivery (which was almost a year ago) without reading any notes. He told me at our very 1st appt with him that he would not take on more patients than he could remember without notes, and that has held true!
Good luck!
Dr. Super is the greatest name for a doctor ever!
I also use Dr. Kent Snowden. I think he is great!
you can request to have the baby kept with you the whole stay there and they will do the assesment and the first bath there in your room
i work at st johns and would go no where else to deliver.
i see dr kueble and he is great and is willing to work with anything you want.. as for the med students you can ask for them not to be in the room period..hope that helps
I just delievered at St. John's 2 1/2 weeks ago and I had a great experience. I could be biased b/c like PP I also work there. I see Dr. Gould (office on Ballas) and I LOVE her. She is great. However, the day of my induction I ended up getting a c-section adn I didn't see her until I got the c-section b/c the office was so busy that day. I felt very well cared for by the RN though and I felt she kept Dr. Gould updated so it wasn't a big deal that she didn't come. I ended up with a c/s for failure to progress b/c my little one wasn't so little. I had 22 hrs of labor but that was no one's fault. My LO had some decels in her HR and I felt the RN did a great job managing my care and caring for my LO the best. I did have a resident check me once which I didn't have a problem with b/c the RN needed reassurance on my progress and I also had a resident break my water which I was fine with b/c I didn't see a need for my OB to come in for that. My epidural came quickly and was a great experience b/c I was terrified of that process.
The only fairly bad experience was my epidural wasn't very effective for me but that was no one's fault. There were some residents in with my c/s but I didn't have a problem with that I just wanted my LO here safely. They did a GREAT job with my incision. HTH and GL with everything!
