Ethan has to have an upper GI

UGH, so I have posted a few times in the last few days about this never ending stomach bug and diarrhea.  Well, Ethan started throwing up again last night.  He also had a day 2 weeks ago where he threw up three times.  I was telling the dr. that I am concerned because of that, and then this stomach bug that he has had for the past week, plus once I started thinking...he had a period of 3 weeks where he threw up once a week (this was back in Nov/Dec) so the pedi wants to order an upper GI.  I was a little surprised because I have had quite a bit of trouble with Shawn and his reflux and Ethan has always been so much more under control with these things.  It is always Shawn that always needs the tests and it is strnage that now my poor little E is struggling too  :(

The other lovely thing, I have to get stool samples from both because they have had diarrhea for 7 full days now.  Ethan has lost 8 oz in 5 days. I am getting pretty worried.

If your little one has had an upper GI, please tell me about it.

Re: Ethan has to have an upper GI

  • Ironically, we just got back from my son's upper GI about an hour ago!

It is a pretty simple test.  He could not eat 3 hours prior to the test.  They fed him about 20 ccs of barium and then moved him from side to side to take different x-ray pics.  IMO, the hardest part was hearing him cry and not being able to go to him.  He was fine--not in pain or anything--just mad he was being held down, turned and not fed.

  • Jaxon had one done when he was about 3 months old. The test is quick and rather easy. They will xray his tummy/throat while he drinks a liquid. You get to watch this with the doc (you will be right next to Ethan the whole time).

The doc examines many factors of how the fluid is going down, if the child refluxes, how quickly it goes thru everything and then watch it into the small intestines. Since Jax had it put thru his NG at the time, they pulled it back out of him since there is no nutritional value or something like that. Jax didn't fuss much at all except being held down with weighted blankets at first. It depends on the mood of the child I think!

Good luck!!! When is the appt??

  • We're having one done on Abby next week.  I can let you know how it goes after the 22nd!

    Good luck.

  • Ugh! Poor Ethan! And poor K! I hope the test goes well. Most of all I hope your sweet boys feel better asap!

I'm so glad they're willing to do more tests!!!?

  • The upper GI and barrium swallow tests aren't bad but the machines can be scary for them and the barrium stuff is kind of gross but flavored.  They get the results quickly too so that's good.

By the way, we always thought Evan's reflux was the worst but after the GI study we learned that actually Cameron's was much worse but he just deals with it differently.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
