Multiples

Question about a possible multiple myth??!

My dad has a twin sister. I'm my dad's only child but his sister had 3 children. The two older children have had kids none of which were multiples. That leaves myself and my younger cousin Carynn to have children and see if we have twins. Is the myth true that it skips every generation and one of us will have a high chance of having twins? I have heard so many different things. I'd just like to know what everyone else has heard or learned about this. Thanks a lot!

Re: Question about a possible multiple myth??!

  • It's not true. And your fathers line doesn't have much to do with the likelyhood of you ovulating two eggs, nor does he have much bearing on whether or not one of your eggs splits :p  The possiblity to twin (fraternals only) passes from mother to mother. So, if it were your mother who had fraternal twin sisters, meaning her mother ovulated doubles, then your chance would be a teensy bit higher.

  • As Faery stated above, only Fraternal twins are genetic, and only passed on the moms side.  I have identicals, and no twins in the family - so it still is possible!

  • Hey I am pregnant with my 2nd set of twins.  My dad has a twin sister, so my grandmom had twins, it skipped my dad's generation..none of his sis, or bros had twins......and here I am the twin factory!  I believe it skips a generation, and I think it comes from dad's side.
  • Ditto the others, I always thought it could be passed down from mom or dad's side but that it is a trait obviously only seen in females since it has to do with ovulation, not with sperm. I figured that was where the skipping a generation thing came from, b/c the men don't have a higher chance of having twins, just the females so if it is on the father's side, it would skip to his daughter...
  • well this should be an interesting journey then! good Lord help me. haha. I have been trying to wait for my cousin to get married and have kids in hopes that she would be the one. I will take anything as a blessing though. I won't be able to hold out for my cousin much longer!
  • It can come from the father's side. There are fraternal twins on my dad's side but in our family it skipped 2 generations!! I was the lucky one! I have never felt so blessed.

they are so adorable! congratulations! I love the names too. Very original. =)

  • The gene that makes you ovulate more than one egg at a time is a female gene and can only be passed from mother to daughter... so unless your dad has a deep dark secret to tell you, he has nothing to do with whether you can have twins or not.  Men do not ovulate therefore they do not carry that gene. As for skipping a generation - the gene can be dominant or recessive - that's a crap shoot. So if it skips or doesn't it's just luck.

  • So people are telling me I'm wrong, but I can't find conclusive evidence of that :-P . I can't seem to find anything from medical journals or other trustworthy places that spell it out. This leads me to believe that it's so totally common sensical that there is no need for trained professionals to write it out for the lay people like this guy *points to self*.

I understand how it's a genetic trait (hyper-ovulating) and you can receive genetic traits from your father. I suppose I never put twinning in there with blue eyes.
