Adoption

Adoption Leave

How long did you and your DH take off of work when you adopted?

Re: Adoption Leave

  • I am a teacher, so I will have 7 months off.  My husband will take about 2 weeks.
  • I'm a teacher and we adopted Ben on my 1st day of summer vacation so I had 2 months off and then took 6 weeks off (paid) at the beginning of the year.  I could have taken another 6 weeks too. I went back to work when Ben was 4 months old and my mom and husband took care of him so I felt much better about returning to work.

My husband took off about 3 weeks.  He works 4 days on and 4 days off so he was home quite a bit.

  • We haven't adopted yet, but DH will take a month and I will probably not go back to work, but if I do, I will take 12 weeks.
  • I think it might help if you specify if you are domestic adopting (DA), becoming foster care parents (with the potential of adoption) or international adopting (IA).

While we have not had a placement yet here is some of the information as I understand it:

DA: average is two weeks in the home state of the baby until paperwork is finalized between the states, but depending on the state this can be as high as over a month. Both spouses do not have to stay the whole time but at least one.

IA: I think this depends on the country you are adopting from as some require you to visit a few times for a certain length of time before you are able to come home with the child (ren)

  • Well, my DH owns/runs his own business, so he really could not take time off.  He was out Thurs/Fri (DD born Thurs), then the weekend obviously, and went back on Monday.  I left work the morning she was born and haven't been back.  We plan for me to be a SAHM at least until DD is in school full time, but that's what works for us.

I do believe most agencies have a minimum time requirement for at least one parent to be home with baby post-placement.  I want to say like 8 or 12 wks was our agency's recommendation, but I can't remember.

  • I plan to take 12 weeks (6 weeks FMLA/medical leave + 6 weeks paid time off).

DH will get about 3 weeks off.

2 years TTC with 5 losses, 1 year recovering, 6 months applying for adoption approval, and almost a year waiting for a placement. Then, a miracle BFP at age 36!

  • I will get whatever vacation time I have available at that point and then up to 12 weeks total unpaid through FMLA.  I figure I will take 6-8 weeks, depending on what we can afford (I am the only one working full time).  DH is part-time/on call so may be around most of the time anyway.  My company is pretty proactive about benefits, so I've made mention of paid adoption leave similar to maternity leave in hopes they will jump on it before we get a placement.
  • I'm "working" from home (finishing up a novel and seeking agentship/publication) so I'll take whatever time I need. Husband will take 3 weeks or so.

  • I work from home so like the pp I can take whatever amount of time that I want. Oh and I am not married or in a relationship. I am adopting as a single parent so no DH or DB to take leave with me.

  • I took 5 weeks off for my newborn fost/adopt placement - fully paid.  There was a week of holiday after that 5 weeks.  Hubby didn't take any days.  She is our second fost/adopt baby/child so we don't want to take tooo much time off if she is reunited and then we start all over again and need another leave.
