I personally opted not to get screened because I am not high risk nor would I do anything to terminate the pregnancy if it came back positive. I heard about a lot of false positives for these type of tests and for me, if anything was questionable, it would have made me worry way too much. But that's just me.

i had the nuchal translucency test done and i'm glad i did - it gave me peace of mind, plus i got to see the babe again!
to say the test has "false positives" isn't all that accurate. the test is a screening test designed to assess your risk of downs/spina bifida. it basically adjusts the your baseline risk (based on age alone/family history) by looking at the u/s and blood work.
if based on age, you have say 1/1000 chance of downs and based on the NT scan, they come back and say your risk is higher (like 1/100) and in the end all turns out to be ok with your baby - that doesnt mean that the test had a "false positive" - it means you were one of the 99 that were ok (you got lucky and weren't that 1 person). The thing with this test is that it is for screening only, not diagnosis. If the test indicated high risk, you need to follow up with a diagnositic test (CVS, amnio) to be sure.
Basically, researchers are not sure why but apparently the folds in the neck between the 11th and 13th week can signal if a baby has down syndrome or not. So they do an ultrasound and it has about a 85% accuracy rate in picking up Downs (the folds will be thick).
At first I told my doctor that I wasn't interested since I am low risk, but I think I'm going to do it if not for anything else the pictures of my baby They do take a drop of your own blood, but other than that it's a ultrasound so it's not invasive at all.
Before you wonder why your OB said 99%, it might be because of the blood test.
