2nd Trimester

Low placenta

So I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but am wondering if anyone else has a low placenta.  We had our u/s today and the tech told me that my placenta is right over my cervix.  I'm eager to go to the doctor to ask about this next week.  Besides this baby looks great, just wouldn't move to get a profile shot:)

Re: Low placenta

  • I did, but as of yesterdays u/s it was up and normal! I really wouldn't worry at all until after 28+ weeks... it almost ALWAYS moves up from what the Tech. and my Dr. said as well as research, so don't freak yourself out!

  • My friend had this and they said it may move as things get bigger and for her everything worked out in the end and she didn't need a c-section.  I hope it will move away from the cervix for you also.
  • Thanks!  I'm not really worried about it.  I know it could still move.  Just more wondering about it:)
  • I have a marginal placenta previa. There are different terms, depending on where the placenta is in relation to the cervix. If the placenta is covering the entire cervix this is a complete previa, if it is partially covering the cevical os (opening) it is a partial previa. If the placenta is within 3cm of the ridge of the cervix but not covering it, it is a marginal pevia (mine was 1mm, then went to 1.5cm & is now 2cm). If the placenta is 3-5cm from the cervix it is considered low lying. The biggest concern is bleeding, I have had 4 bleedign epsiodes & so I have been taken off work & put on modified bedres until the end of my pregnancy. We will do another ultrasound in 3rd trimester to decide on delivery. If you have a previa (complete, partial or marginal) it is usually necessary to deliver by c-section between 37&38 weeks, the is because the placenta is in the way of delivery, and they do not want you to go into labour to prevent abruption. With a low-lying placenta it depends on the circumstance if you have to have a c-section or not.

That being said. It is relatively early. If you have not had bleeding you probably will not have too many restrictions, except maybe pelvic rest (no sex) as it can cause bleeding. As your uterus grows the placenta most of migrates before delivery, thats why they often check on it closer to delivery.  Pretty much talk to your doctor and find out exactly where your placenta is. Obviously the further away from the cervix the better.

  • I have it, it usually moves, mine is causing bleeding right now so I'm on bedrest but its not harming the baby. Its not always a bad thing.
