s/o allergies and pets- Anyone have the Dyson Animal?

We've been thinking about getting one- $400 is ALOT of money to drop on a vacume. Right now we have the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser and it doesn't work that great, which is disappointing b/c it wasn't cheap, either.

I made the mistake of vacuming up something damp and stinky and no matter how many times I COMPLETELY take apart the vacume and clean it, it stinks!

Right now, with two big dogs and two cats, I vacume every other day and STILL feel like I live in a dander wasteland.

Any good ideas?

  • Honestly, get the Dyson... it's worth every penny. Just shop around online you may be able to find one a little cheaper. I have flooring in my house so a pet vacuum doesn't work for me... the old fashion broom and mop is all I have.

My parents got the dyson two years ago and it is the best investment.  Every once in a while I will borrow my moms to vacuum a room with carpet in it and there is a huge difference in that compared to a regular bissel or other vacuum. Not only does it suck better, but it is relatively lightweight and its pretty and purple. =]

  • I have the DC07 (Pink one from Target) and really love it - I think the attachments are what makes it the "animal" and more expensive.
Mine works great and the basic attachments have been sufficient with my 3 cats and a dog.

  • We have one! I LOVE IT!!! We vacuumed with our old vacuum, then the next day we bought the Dyson, we vacuumed that day and emptied the canister 3 times from all the dog hair that it collected!

?I think that Bed Bath and Beyond sells them, you can use the %20 off coupon on it! ?We bought ours at Best Buy and used the BBB coupon there too.?

?I have no advice on cleaning the vacuum though...maybe try a vinegar solution??

  • We have 2 cats and got the Dyson Animal as our Christmas present to ourselves this year (it helped that our old vacuum died at the same time!).   I love it - it is incredibly lightweight and works great.  The only catch is that you have to empty the canister more often, but that doesn't bother me because it is easy to do.

  • We had (for a few years) the DC17 Animal from Bed Bath and Beyond. It seemed to lose it's suction and after a while the seal wouldn't hold so the filter would clog up instantly. I took it back and bought a Hoover or a Bissel and it was crap. I ended up repurchasing a Dyson. We went with the DC14 this time because the tools that made the DC17 so much more expensive never got used. HTH.

  • And PP is right, it is totally worth the money - lifetime hepa filter and no bags make it cheaper in the long run, and I have had mine for almost 4 years and never had a problem.  As long as you keep the brush free of hair and string it works like a champ!

  • We have a black lab who sheds like crazy and we are ok with the Dyson. However, we don't have a lot of carpet to clean.  Most of the floors are either hardwood or linoleum. We have to clean/wash the Dyson relatively often because after a little while it smells like dog hair.  Ick!
  • If you're thinking of a Dyson, and have time before you want to buy it - hold off and wait for it to come up on www.woot.com - they do a deal of the day and occasionally the Dyson makes it on there.
