we built our townhouse and the guest rooms did not come with lighting in each room, so one of the last things i need to do is find a lamp or have someone come in and put in something in the ceiling (ugh).
We have the same problem! We have the little lamp that goes with the bedding set. We really don't want to make a hole in our ceiling, since we live in a condo. I'm going to look for some kind of lamp that plugs in and hangs (like a lantern). We don't have room for a standing light.
we have a table lamp and a floor lamp. Just cheap ones for now. the floor lamp is light and might need to be fixed to a wall with a strap when he gets walking or crawling, for now it is fine.
We do have built in lighting, but we got the lamp that came with our bedding set, along with the nightlight, so I we dont have to look at the brighter light from above in the middle of the night.
We keep saying that if we were putting in new lighting we would make sure we had a dimmer light/switch for the overhead light, that would be my only suggestion to you.
I think MH is all projected out to do the dimmer in our nursery now!
We DO have built in lighting, but I might be able to give you options, anyway.
You can try wall sconces instead of something in the ceiling. We have a little lamp on one of the dressers for when we feed/change the baby at night and don't want the light on. We have this little corner table in the living room with a lamp and the phone on it--DH wants to move it to the nursery so we can have the lamp on that instead, though.
I'd check out Home Depot or Lowes (if you have them). They have a lot of lights for really reasonable prices.
I generally like lamp light much better than overhead light anyway, so if I were you I wouldn't pay to have overhead light installed. We have lamps in all our bedrooms and we will be using a basic floor lamp in our nursery. I am also really tempted to buy one of these lamps too because they are so cute and look like they provide pretty, soft lighting:
we were in the same situation. DH wanted to get wall sconces that just attached to the wall rather than being installed...so they would still have a visible cord...I wasn't crazy about them...mostly cause I am not crazy about lamps in general.
I was reading recently that another recommended SIDs prevention is good venitilation/circulation in the room and that a ceiling fan is recommended. DH agreed that this would actually add value to the house as well and he installed them the other day in the baby's room and our guest room.
It looks great, has a dimmer, as well as a variable fan so we can keep it on low most of the time.

I would suggest a floor lamp or two depending on how much light you prefer.. it will give off more light than a little table lamp.. we did this in our apt before buying our house. I actually prefer it b/c I hate light shining down on me... I prefer a "glow" lol Good luck to you!

I should also note that DH would not consider himself handy, but with the help of a second person (also not handy) they got both installed in a half day and they look terrific.
Total cost was about 200 bucks...this was for all the parts and 2 fans from Home Depot

We rent in a 2 family Victorian house so we can't put in an overhead lamp. It annoys me cause the baby's room is the only room in the entire apt that doesn't have an overhead lamp.
Anyway, we have a floor lamp and table lamp that came with our bedding set we are going to put very soft bulbs in. (the baby's room has two doors so that way the soft lamp will be on either side)
Then we have a third table lamp that we will put in a regular bulb in just for those times we need full light. But now I'm kind of motivated to look at the ones at Ikea and DH will probably kill me if I want to spend more $. LOL.

If you are looking for something inexpensive, you could try IKEA. They have a pretty big selection... They even have a children's lighting section

We have overhead lighting, but we bought a small table lamp from Target from their mix and match collections.
It's pretty simple...just a brushed nickel base and a white shade.
