Baby Names

How would you pronounce Xavier?

Zavier or  Eg-zavier?  This was a name I loved last pg, DH vetoed it. This pg he brought it up as a suggestion, ha. I love it but I like it spelled with a Z. I'm afraid people would pronounce it 2 ways. Plus what is a good NN for it with an X? With a Z they could call him "Z". My maiden name began with a Z and everyone called my brother Z, so I am partial to that!

Re: How would you pronounce Xavier?

  • I don't know if there's a "right" way, but I would pronounce it Zavier.

  • I've only heard it pronounced Ex-Avier

  • I've always pronounced it as a Z. My cousin's name is Xavier and his nn is X-man (it has nothing to do with the movie either).

    Spelled with an X - eck-zavier

    Spelled with a Z - just like it's spelled - Zavier.

  • I think in the sports world Xavier Univ. is pronounced Zavier.

    Same here.

  • I would pronounce it like Zavier (like the school, as pp said).  I would definitely spell it with an X, though.  The spelling "Zavier" makes me think of names like "Shawn" -- it seems dumbed down.
  • I would pronounce it Zavier, and I like it spelled with the X.
  • I say it Zah-vier
  • i'd say "Ex-aviar" - I knew an Xavier and everyone called him "X-Man"
  • I would say "Zavier" like Xavier University in Cincinnati. But I would spell is  Xavier not with a Z.

Ditto.  "Xavier" is pronounced "Zavier".  I've never heard it pronounced "Ex-avier" - sounds like someone trying to pronounce it a bit too phonetically.

I like it spelled Xavier better.  You could call him "X" as a NN, even though it's pronounced "Zavier".

In Spanish/French, Xavier/Javier is pronounced "Ha-vee-AIR"... I like it Wink

  • My students with this name pronounce theirs differently, so I ask "do you pronounce your name eck-zavier, or zavier?"  Then I go forth accordingly.  If I had no way to ask someone, I would pronounce it "zavier".

I don't like that spelling though, of "Zavier".  I think Xavier is a really nice name either way you pronounce it.

  • Whoa.  I have never in my life heard anyone pronounce this name Ex-avier.  That seems really weird to me.  If I heard someone say it like that, I would probably kind of laugh to myself because it honestly sounds like that person doesn't know how to pronounce the name.  I had no idea people pronounced it like that on purpose!!!

I thought this poll was going to be between the Americanized and the French pronunciation.

I would say Zay-v-yer.  But in French, they say Zaaaa-vee-a (long a on the end).  So, I would probably ask if it was pronounced Zay-v-ier or Zaaa-v-ee-a.

    Tritto.

The only time I've heard it as ecks-avier is on a really really stupid show on Adult Swim.

  • I knew an Xavier and he pronounced it ecks-avier.

  • I've only ever heard Zavier, which is how I would pronounce it.

  • In the past I would have said Eg-zavier, but we have a cousin now named Xander (pronounced Zander), so I might be more inclined to say Zavier now.
  • First of all I want to say that you are so courageous to keep trying after those miscarriages. I pray that your current pg. sticks! About Xavier....the founder of cabbage patch dolls' name is Xavier (he signs their bottoms). I would pronounce it ex-avier. I think it is a unique name and sounds dignified. Good Luck!
