When will these horrible feeding issues end??

So life hasn't gotten much better. I never thought that my life could be so consumed with trying to get my baby to eat. The docs say to thicken her bottle to nectar consistency. When I do that, she barely eats anything. It took me almost an hour to get her to eat 2.5 ounces of it this morning. If the bottle is too thin, she chokes and screams. Seriously, this is getting so old. I'm so worried that she is going to start losing weight. I can't stand the frustration and the ridiculous anxiety of trying to get her to eat enough to thrive.

I am so jealous of moms with "normal" healthy babies. They have no idea how good they have it.

Re: When will these horrible feeding issues end??

  • I too would love to know when this all ends.  Granted, A's eating issues aren't quite as bad as what you have going on, but never the less, it's still stressful.  My mood for the day is totally dependent on how much A eats.  I want to slap some of the posters that I see wondering if they're baby is eating too much!  Oh, wouldn't that be an awesome problem to have?!

I'm just taking a shot in the dark here, but you said when you thicken her bottle she barely eats.  Is it because she can't get it through the nipple as easily?  Do you need a faster flow nipple or one of the ones with a Y cut in it?  Like I said, just a thought.  I'm no expert.

We've discovered that to get A to eat, we need to rock her and have her almost dozing off.  That is the ONLY way she'll eat.  Otherwise it's a battle.  Sometimes we have to alternate between the bottle and the paci.

I know how draining it is, so please know you are not alone.  I know that doesn't fix things, but at least you're in good company!  I had a total meltdown yesterday morning and that made me feel a bit better.  Afterwards I always manage to come around to the point that I'm doing the best that I possibly can.

  • Maybe you've tried it, but usually when you thicken to nectar consistency, you need to use the cross-cut nipple.  That's what we reccommend (speech/language pathologists) when working with feeding.

  • I understand, hon. We've lived that way for so long.. if he eats well.. Happy momma.. he eats poorly.. sad, frustrated momma. And I try NOT to be, but how do you not?

    It sucks.

  • I am so sorry. I am losing it as well. I am not sure there has been a day in the last 2 weeks where I haven't started crying @least once. I can't wait until wednesday when we go to see the speech pathologist. I am so stressed out. My dh travels 2-4 days a week and my fam lives in IL so I have no help.......I know this doesn't make you feel better. But I love ya girl :) Thanks for always listening
  • Right there with you ladies...
