So when did your feet swell?

I got home this evening and noticed my feet are a litte swollen. I was on my feet nonstop today and didn't sit at all. I think I might need to take it easy tomorrow at work. All of my classes had projects that required me to be on my feet ALL day.

So when did you notice swelling? I've got my piggies up now.

  • I forgot to add with pregnancy.

  • With pg you mean?

Mine didn't luckily. I sat my big butt in my chair and taught at the end. It didn't help I was having contractions early on.

  • Mine only happened occasionally. I think I had 2 weekends where I noticed more swelling than normal.
  • Mine never did but I dont think I'm a good tell of anything normal with a pregnancy.  I didnt have any of the typical stuff.
  • I only had swelling when I ate a lot of salty food up until last week (33 weeks).  Now, everyday by the end of the day my hands and feet are both puffy.  I keep my feet up most of the day in my office and drink tons of water and have cut out most salty foods but they still swell.  I had to take my wedding ring off because I was afraid it'd get stuck.

I've heard that swelling can be from protein deficiency.  I'm assuming that if you only swell when you're on your feet all day, it probably has more to do with that, but if you end up having more problems with swelling, you could monitor your protein intake.

  • Only a little after work starting around 35 weeks. Which is also when my blood pressure went up. So be sure to check your BP everytime you see one of those machines.

  • I did my sil's wedding photography at around 20 weeks. They swelled up and were never the same after. I had enormo, humungo feet and ankles, especially in the third tri. It was ridiculous actually.

  • I had major swelling with my first one starting at about 34 weeks.

But, with my second, none at all. I was sure to drink lots of water, and salt my food! And eat AT LEAST 75 grams of protien a day. Its kind of counter-intuitive at first, but when you think about it, it makes sense. Your blood volume doubles in pregnancy. You need the salts to allow the fluid to pass through your cell membranes. If you don't keep the salts going, then you have extra fluid that can't pass through the membranes. That equals swelling.

My midwife with my last birth (and with this one too) has been adament that I salt my food to taste. Avoid processed stuff like canned foods and packaged foods, those salts are apparantly not good. But a nice sea salt or table salt is what you need to prevent swelling.

Oh, and don't forget exercise! Not just being on your feet at work, but walks, bike rides, whatever. That makes a huge difference with swelling.

And of course, like the pp said, protein. You need lots of it in pregnancy, and it will lead to swelling if you don't have enough. I can't remember the exact reason, but you could look it up. 75grams is hard to get, too. So I found it helpful to keep track of my protein intake to be sure I was getting enough.

  • Mine started at about 16 weeks and got really bad in the 3rd tri.  By the end I had to buy bigger shoes and couldn't lace them.  After the swelling went down my feet had wrinkles until the skin went back to normal :)
  • Not until I was hooked up to petocin for induction.  I worked retail walking a mile each way to work until a month before my due date.

but I was SO bloated after giving birth from the stupidf'in petocin.  Evil vile sh!t.

  • I swelled from about 26 weeks on. It got progressively worse. Putting my feet up didn't even help. I was due in August, so I am sure that didn't help. The only shoes I could wear at the end were crocs and flipflops. I never had a problem with my blood pressure. It finally went away about 1 1/2 weeks post partum.

  • My feet didn't swell until after I had already given birth (c-section). Figures.?
  • Mine didn't until I was 8 months PG and I was running around Italy on a singing tour in the summer heat. Then they swelled up like sausages.  After that they seemed really sensitive to swelling.
