Baby Names

Selah

We love this name for a girl.  It's in our top two.  It's from the book of Psalms.  I've heard it translated in lots of different ways, but it means something like "reflect and praise God."  And it's not pronounced like Sela Ward (which rhymes with "ella"), it's prounounced like "say-luh."  Middle name would be Kate.

I also love that it's in the 900s in popularity according to SS, so it's pretty uncommon.

We have gotten very mixed reviews on this.  What are your thoughts?

Re: Selah

  • I like it. I was unsure until you gave the meaning.

    Go for it.

  • It's not one we considered (too out-there for DH), but I love it!  It has such a beautiful meaning and it's so soft and pretty.

One of my very good friends is naming her daughter Selah. It's NMS, but is a beautiful word from the Bible.?
  • I absolutely love it.

  • Actually, I like it. Lauryn Hill sings a song called Selah that I adore.

    Blank!
  • Love that Lauryn Hill song too!
  • I think it's beautiful.
  • Well I would pronounce it diffefrently than you do. I would say "C-la". It's a nice name but one that she'll probably have to correct ppl on.
  • I'm not a huge fan; it's just not a name, imo.  I have very traditional taste when it comes to names, and I tend not to like "word" names.  That said, it's about 1000x better than a lot of the word names we see here (Heaven/Nevaeh, Rain, etc.).  I do think she'll have to spell it for people/correct their pronunciation a lot, but I don't think that's such a big deal.
  • I like it! Just wonder if it will be mispronounced? (I would have said it like Sela Ward until I read further)

I agree. I also though Sela Ward's name was pronounced this way all these years! Selah is pretty but if there are evidentally three ways to say it, then she'll be called all three.

??And it's not pronounced like Sela Ward (which rhymes with "ella")

Actually, her name is pronounced "See-lah"?

  • I think it is gorgeous! I might need to add it to my list.
  • I think it's very pretty, but I too would pronounce it See-lah.  If that bothers you, reconsider, but if not I think it's a great name.
